Interesting to see Bain's view of the holiday season from James Anderson. Single digit growth expected however non-retail (online/ecommerce/dtc) will out perform instore in terms of growth. I'm pretty confident that when we look back at 2024 and take a view back to growth rates and market share pre covid, across online and DTC, that the online share of retail, will continue to climb, and the growth rate will be higher. It's hard to see trends when you are in the middle of them, especially with narrative in the market designed to pitch a particular position. What's absolutely certain is a fully unified channel strategy is key to success at scale. It's also important to remember that Online and Offline customers are the same people so ensure you position your channels effectively. As Bain have pointed out, value is definitely the unlock if you want to exceed the average benchmarks and 2024, more than ever before, will be won if you can cut through effectively. The way to do this is to have a balanced investment strategy across all stages of the funnel, avoiding the crowd and focusing your marketing investment away from the hype. Trust they will come when the time is right as long as you have done the work up front and your proposition and price is right!
