No pet owner ever wants to think of the day they need to part with their beloved pet, but the option to give our pets a quick and pain-free death to end their suffering is a matter of good animal welfare and our last act of kindness to them. Leaving an animal to suffer is poor animal welfare and should never be an option. In our latest Pawprint magazine, we dived deep into the topic to help animal lovers understand why a veterinary surgeon may recommend euthanasia from an animal welfare standpoint, and to help pet owners determine when it is time to let go to end suffering. We are also providing transparency to debunk some long-standing misconceptions about our euthanasia policy for rescue animals at the SPCA. 🐾 Understanding Animal Welfare in Veterinary Care 🐾 By paolo martelli and Karthiyani Krishnasamy When animals undergo veterinary treatment, whether for therapy, quarantine, or preventive care, their natural behaviors and choices are often restricted, impacting their overall wellbeing. Traditional concepts of animal welfare don’t fully capture the unique challenges faced by these animals. A new paradigm is being proposed that distinguishes between animal wellbeing and animal welfare, offering clearer guidance for ensuring the comfort and quality of life for animals in human care. This approach aims to enhance our understanding and improve the practices surrounding the welfare of animals during their medical journeys. Last month, I had a chance to have a very interesting chat with @Marscha from DaretoCare about my personal experiences with Animal Welfare. 🥰 It was very nice to have the chance to exchange about my vision on how to find realistic solutions for improving the conditions for animals in Europe, more specifically through the EU legislative process. 🤗 It’s definitely not the first or the last time that I’m saying this, but we really need to 1) increase animal health and welfare literacy for politicians and 2) political literacy for veterinary professionals and animal caretakers! 📚 Spoiler alert: this episode contains tips for vets to become more politically active and to use their extremely valuable “in field” knowledge to help saving lives through better legislation 🥹

[Proposed guidelines for animal shelters – Share your views by 1 Feb 2025] The Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of NParks, is seeking inputs from the public on a proposed set of guidelines for animal shelters in Singapore. These guidelines aim to establish common standards of animal welfare and share best practices across all shelters. Animal shelters play an important role in the care and rehoming of pet animals in Singapore and currently operate with their own set of practices and standards. Following engagements with our Animal Welfare Group (AWG) rehoming partners over the last three years and inputs from a focus group discussion held in September 2024 with representatives from animal shelters, veterinarians, and animal trainers, we are ready to share the proposed sections for the guidelines. Your views are crucial in shaping these guidelines which will go towards enhancing the care of the for animals in shelters in Singapore. To participate in the consultation, please complete our online survey by 2 February 2025: https://lnkd.in/giMYMSA4 #AnimalBuzzSG #CityinNatureSG
