When I worked at UCHealth in Colorado Springs they were already a designated #militaryfriendly company with an emphasis on #Veterans. But with at least 6 military installations between Colorado Springs and Denver, they decided that wasn’t enough. They decided they wanted to be a #militaryspousefriendly employer too. So what did they do? They formed a committee of their employees who were also military spouses! They made sure to have the right voices at the table to ensure their efforts delivered actual results. They recognized as a hospital system that for their #militaryspouse #clinicians they could not offer job transferability or remote work with a #PCS, but they knew there was still room for improvement in their current policies. Items discussed before I moved were things like: ✴️extra PTO when your active duty member is deployed or on an extended TDY ✴️city-wide advertising that they wanted to hire military spouses ✴️a mentor/mentee type program for new and seasoned military spouse employees to connect and support each other I was floored by this and it was with great sadness that we moved away as the committee was gaining momentum. But such is the way of #military life. If a company wants to make changes to be more military spouse friendly, they need to ask the military spouse community because things that seem good in a locked boardroom don’t always translate to real world help. #militaryspouseemployment

I retired/transitioned from military service four years ago, it was a good experience for me, although I had a difficult time finding myself. I had some real issues that needed attention. After a few months I was provided the stern, loving push that I needed. After two successful rounds of counseling and having the courage to now be 3.5 years sober, I can say that I know who I am, and I live each day with a personal and professional purpose of advocacy. Veterans, lean in to your transition early, and be brutally honest as you assess yourself each step of the way. Address problems, accept help, ask questions, and find a mentor in your area of professional interest; this a HIGHLY recommended idea. Listen, learn and pursue your career with vigor. Lets face it, choosing a SkillBridge program can be daunting. The DoD web site is clunky and doesn't offer much insight to the roughly 4850 options you can filter through. There is no one right answer as to which one is the best. That's a personal choice dependent on your situation and what path you want to take post-military. Here's why I chose Allegiant Vets: 1. Access to a vast community of vets at all stages of transition to network and learn from. The Discord has channels dedicated to VA support, job fairs, education and self care just to name a few. 2. Participation in an encouraging environment. 3. Various learning paths to choose from and the ability to change course if you find it isn't for you. 4. The flexibility to participate from my home anywhere in the world and I make my schedule. 5. Am able to start and finish my SkillBridge with AV on my timeline and am not dependent on a cohort. 6. As a former military member, I have had my fair share of experiences with trauma and the difficulty of trusting others once leaving the military. It can be incredibly challenging to seek comfort and be vulnerable after serving in such a high-stress environment. One thing that I have noticed is the difference in how men and women experience the military community. I have seen very few individuals, both male and female, who are willing to stand up for their fellow service members in situations that could potentially cost them their careers. However, I have also been fortunate enough to serve with many who did pass that test, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and support. I believe that this issue extends beyond the military environment and into the civilian workforce as well. It speaks to the larger issue of values and morals, and whether or not they were truly present from the beginning. It is not just about the military community, but about life in general. I encourage all of us, both in the military and in civilian life, to reflect on our values and the kind of support we are willing to offer to others. It is through these actions that we can create a more trustworthy and supportive environment for all. Last week presented a series of difficult challenges for our team, including a suicide attempt, financial struggles, inpatient admission applications, and disability applications. It was a tough week, but I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and pride for each member of our team. The work we do is incredibly important, and it's not always easy. It can feel lonely and overwhelming at times, but it's important to remember that we are making a real difference in the community. The support and comfort we provide to those in need will ultimately make us stronger as individuals and as a team. I want to thank each and every one of you for your hard work, dedication, and compassion. Let's continue to support each other and the community as we navigate through these difficult situations together. We are making a positive impact, and that should be a source of comfort and pride for all of us. I do not see anything that indicates limitations associated with service delivery. We need more transparency and oversight of programs that are government funded.The mismanagement and abuse of programs hurt the beneficiaries. This is where the private sector, or curse word predatory agencies will thrive. It is time to be better, and do better. This requires skin in the game as groups that just talk a good game will create further frustration.
