Millions invested into Lüderitz to drive strategic development: Staff Reporter SEVERAL development projects are planned for Lüderitz in the //Kharas Region to prepare the town for the anticipated developments driven by the emerging green hydrogen industry, as well as oil and gas exploration. “Lüderitz has been allocated N$9 million to initiate the Town Transformation Programme. This initiative aims to prepare Lüderitz for the industrial developments anticipated in the region, particularly due to the expected influx from the oil and gas industry as well as hydrogen projects,” Aletta Fredericks, the Governor of the //Kharas Region, said while delivering the State of the Region Address earlier this week. According to the governor, Lüderitz is set to become one of the country’s fastest-growing towns, fuelled by the rise of green hydrogen and advances in oil and gas development. To support this, she announced that the council has begun constructing a 33-megavolt (MV) powerline, extending from the main incomer substation to the Nautilus incomer substation. Fredericks shared that this project, already in progress, has a total budget of N$3 million and is expected to be completed this month. The governor also disclosed that the Road Fund Administration has provided N$3.8 million to the Lüderitz Town Council for road maintenance. Additionally, plans are underway to establish private healthcare facilities in the southern coastal town. “Plans are also underway to establish a private hospital, with the Environmental Impact Assessments currently underway, and land is being sought to establish a third private medical centre,” Fredericks said. She also mentioned that the council has started constructing a salmon factory in Lüderitz, which is anticipated to create 600 jobs in the town once it becomes fully operational. The governor further noted that a budget of N$71 million has been allocated to the Lüderitz Town Council for youth empowerment initiatives during the 2024-2025 financial year. This funding is intended for training programmes aimed at providing unemployed youth with essential skills. 🌍 EEP Africa once again received a high volume of applications under the annual Call for Proposals. A total of 494 expressions of interest (EOI) were submitted, of which 74% were deemed eligible for funding based on the Application Guidelines. 📝After an eligibility screening and a thorough review of all submitted EOIs, the applications have been narrowed down to a longlist of 80 applicants. These longlisted applicants have been invited to a pitch interview, where they will get a chance to present and discuss their project with a panel of evaluators. 🙏We want to thank all the companies that applied for funding during this round. In 3rd day of PIDA Week, we explored the exciting possibilities of green infrastructure, particularly in renewable energy and low-carbon transportation. During the discussion, I introduced The African Catalyst (TAC) as a platform dedicated to the early-stage preparation of large-scale infrastructure projects. We highlighted how project preparation facilities can help de-risk projects, making them viable and sustainable. At TAC, we interact with the private sector but emphasize that project preparation goes beyond pre-feasibility studies. To ensure project success, we focus on: i. The sector in which the project is developed. ii. The government’s willingness to pay for procurement. iii. Proper project preparation funding. Unlike the fintech sector, where Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) demonstrate proof of concept, infrastructure projects don’t have MVPs. Instead, they rely on ideas, reports, agreements, and belief in the vision. This lack of tangible proof often makes it challenging for stakeholders to grasp the value of project preparation funding. This is why it’s essential for private-sector players or infrapreneur like i call them to: i. Generate traction for their projects. ii. Take ownership and drive the vision. iii. Communicate the project’s value effectively to stakeholders. At The African Catalyst, we’ve developed the Early-Stage Readiness Program (ESIR). This advanced entrepreneurial finance training equips entrepreneurs working on idea-to-early-stage large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects with the skills to make their projects investment-ready, overcoming barriers to early-stage financing. Think you're eligible for a U.S. cleantech grant? Check first whether these 6 parameters apply to your company: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝘁: Ensure your project aligns with the grant's focus area. For example, if it's for protecting offshore wind farms against lightning, your tech should fit exactly that category. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲: Make sure your project size meets the funding criteria. 3️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: For larger grants, showcase your product's market success and outline a clear path to increased sales and revenue. 4️⃣ 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Demonstrate how your project reduces CO2 or other emissions. This is a key factor for approval. 5️⃣ 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: You must have an American workforce and manufacture domestically. Your headquarters can be elsewhere, but your operations must support American jobs and U.S. supply chains. 6️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Provide jobs, offer good wages, and engage with the wider community around your project. It's about harnessing the power of purposeful quests to navigate the complexities of life and work with intelligence and insight.
