Sept 10th - World Suicide Prevention Day If someone you know expresses thoughts of suicide, it can be shocking and heartbreaking. The most important thing you can do is listen to what they have to say. • Try to remain calm • Don’t change the subject • Don’t be dismissive or try to problem solve for them • Make a commitment to be there for them and let them know they are not alone. If you feel like you or someone you know is at immediate risk, call 911 and make sure the person isn’t left alone. Other resources: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline • Your Employee Assistance Program • Canada Suicide Prevention Service 833-456-4566 • Healthline 811 For more information: meritsask.com/wellness

What is suicide prevention? It’s knowing about crisis numbers, it’s mental health first aid training, it’s leathal means restriction. It’s everything Raj and I had. It didn’t matter. So much of suicide prevention is focused on identifying and intervening at that last moment, the moment before someone takes their last action. And don’t get me wrong, that is important. But what about intervening at the millions of moments that lead up to that final one? If you live in a community full of stigma, knowing about 988 won’t make you call it. If you live in a community full of stigma, having crisis training available to you won’t make you take it. If you live in a community of stigma, you will hesitate to ask for help when you’re considering ending it all, just like you did for every struggle leading up to that. Community awareness, education, and safety is a critical part of suicide prevention. And it’s high time we recognize it as such. Thank you to CBS and KFF for highlighting my experiences as part of this story. And thank you Cheryl Platzman Weinstock for insisting on a picture of me and Raj—this one is from our last Thanksgiving together, and it’s my favorite 💕

We are joining forces with over 40 suicide prevention and mental health organizations to call on the Federal Government to release the National Suicide Prevention Strategy by World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. The delay in releasing this strategy has serious consequences for both the Australian community and the dedicated professionals working tirelessly in the suicide prevention and mental health sectors, as they struggle to meet the increasing demands of those in distress. A comprehensive, whole-of-government approach to suicide prevention, as outlined in the National Strategy, is essential now more than ever. Australians are currently facing significant challenges, including cost-of-living pressures, unemployment, and ongoing economic uncertainty. Primary prevention is essential, involving a societal understanding of developmental psychopathology to help children grow into thriving adults. At Raising Moxie, we emphasize proactive measures to address issues early on. Prevention should focus on nurturing children from the start in various environments, including homes, schools, and communities, through education and proactive efforts. By addressing root causes and following scientific understanding, much suffering can be prevented. For more information, visit Raisingmoxie.com.

World Suicide Prevention Day – Let’s Do Better, Together Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day to reflect on the alarming number of lives lost and the steps we must take to stop it. This year alone, more than 4,500 people in Canada have died by suicide. Tragically, 75% of these deaths—roughly 3,375—were men, and around 900 young people aged 15-24 also died by suicide, making it the second leading cause of death in this age group. We are not only losing friends—we are losing each other to mental health struggles. Moms, dads, kids, and loved ones are slipping away because of mental health struggles and isolation. I’ve personally felt this loss. What we do matters, our intention matters, and our support matters. Reach out to those you love and care for today. It feels good to give, and it feels great to receive. Take a moment to be of service with love, kindness, compassion, and intention. It may save a life, and it may even save yours. The content we share and the words we speak have the power to either lift someone up or push them down. Stop spreading negativity, it can be the tipping point for someone. Instead, ask people how they are doing—really doing—and take the time to listen. Sometimes, all it takes is for someone to know that they’re not alone, that someone cares. Our children are struggling too. With 900 young people lost to suicide every year in Canada, that is 20%, we must be vigilant. The pressures they face—academic, social, and online—are overwhelming. Let’s make sure we check in on them, offer support, and create a safe space for them to open up. Together, we can make a difference. If you’re feeling alone, reach out. If you see someone struggling, ask them how you can help. Spread kindness, hope, and love. We can do better. We must do better. Because every life is worth saving. Let’s take action, today and every day. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealthMatters #BeKind #YouMatter #MensMentalHealth #EndTheStigma #CompassionMatters #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealthMatters #BeKind #YouMatter #EndTheStigma #CompassionMatters Canadian Men's Health Foundation Courtnall Society for Mental Health Kids Help Phone https://lnkd.in/g8tvKRyn

Proud just doesn't cut it! My amazing Dad has shared his story and experiences in this powerful article on a topic that needs more attention: suicide prevention in the workplace. It's crucial that we rethink the way we talk about mental health and suicide. New research by MHFA England highlights how outdated language and misconceptions continue to hinder lifesaving conversations. Did you know that asking someone directly if they have a plan can actually save lives? Let’s break the stigma and start having these important conversations. I encourage everyone to read this and reflect on how we can all make a difference. #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #EndTheStigma
