Yesterday, a patient came into our practice with symptoms suggestive of diverticulitis. I felt well-prepared and informed to provide the best care possible.💡 As a physician, I understand the profound impact of staying updated and knowledgeable. Patient Education is a *critical* link in the chain of healthcare today. Yet, it often remains undervalued within the industry. As my father passed away from Kidney disease they told us to "pick" which comorbidity that we wanted him to preferably pass from (talk about PRESSURE). Proper education would have brought some much needed humanity and dignity into the choices we had to make as a family. Twenty years ago, I sent an email to all our employees about my experience with a colonoscopy. Symptom, risks and outcomes. I did it to stress the importance of being vigilant with their health and getting regular checkups. It raised a few eyebrows, but I hoped to make a small difference. Recently, my brother-in-law, Adam Bottomley, recommended I read Dr Peter Attia's 2023 International best seller, 'Outlive'. It's a brilliantly articulated book that sets out 'the why' of patient empowerment and the future of medicine. I highly recommend it. These days I want to make a difference through technology and applied behavioural science.
