"3+ years of non-internship experience" Every time I read this sentence on a JD I get so frustrated! Times have changed - interns don't fetch coffee for the team or do odd jobs for their superiors anymore. Remote internships wouldn't even allow them to do that! I did almost an year long internship at a big company and that was the most rewarding professional experience ever. I provided tangible value/deliverables through the projects I worked on that my team can use way after I left. Most of us aren't even allowed to do full-time/part-time work as international students, Many of us have to fulfill course requirements as a part of our higher education programs. Finding internships in the first place has become significantly difficult than it used to be since they are now more catered to the role we want to step into after graduation rather than an open-ended - "do-whatever-we-tell-you-to-do" or "get-me-those-skirts-from-calvin-klein" TL;DR: If you're hiring for an entry-level role, you can/should value internship experience as collaborative work in a professional setting. :(

My First Internship Was Unpaid! Hi LinkedIn Family, In the summer of 2020, I was eagerly looking forward to my first paid internship, set to begin on June 20. After a series of follow ups with multiple companies, this was my chance to finally earn while learning. I had worked hard to secure this opportunity and was excited to dive in. However, the world had other plans. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread rapidly, the world came to a standstill. Businesses shut down, and the internship I had been so thrilled about was canceled. I felt devastated and uncertain about my future. One day, while I was discussing my situation with my family friend, they suggested a remote, unpaid internship opportunity. It wasn’t ideal, but it was something. I wasn’t sure whether to take it or not. It felt like a step back, especially after the excitement of securing a paid position. I shared my dilemma with my father. He listened patiently and then said something that stuck with me: "It's better to have an unpaid opportunity than no opportunity at all. Experience is invaluable, and it will pay off in the long run." His words resonated with me, and I decided to take his advice. I joined the remote internship, initially with some hesitation. However, as the weeks went by, I realized how invaluable this experience was. The work was challenging and engaging, and I was learning a lot. The team was supportive, and I found myself growing both personally and professionally. This internship turned out to be instrumental in shaping my career. The skills I acquired and the projects I worked on became significant talking points in future job interviews. More importantly, it taught me the value of perseverance and adaptability in the face of uncertainty. In the end, what seemed like a setback turned into a pivotal moment in my career journey. My father's advice had been spot on: gaining experience, regardless of the circumstances, was crucial.
