💡Imagine an internet where user safety and well-being are priorities, transparency is non-negotiable and social media companies' are accountable and responsible to users. This future is possible with CCDH's STAR Framework, a blueprint to combat online harms and fortify our democracy. It stands for: S➡️Safety by Design T➡️Transparency A➡️Accountability R➡️Responsibility Let's unpack it 👇 1. Today, social media's business model incentivizes companies to use every trick to keep users addicted to their platforms. Safety by Design would prompt these companies to design their digital products with user health and well-being in mind from the very beginning. 2. Social media companies have complete control over what data they make public, so they cherry-pick the info that makes their platform seem less harmful. Transparency would make these companies disclose data about algorithms, product design, platform decisions and advertising. 3. In the US, social media companies have been able to evade accountability and responsibility due to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Accountability and Responsibility would force social media companies to be responsive to users and democratic institutions. At CCDH, we dream of a STAR future where: ⭐️Kids are shielded from online harms and develop digital literacy ⭐️Marginalized groups are protected from harassment ⭐️Users aren't bombarded with disinformation ⭐️ Everyone feels safe online To make it come true, governments and lawmakers must implement our STAR Framework. ExchangeWire #ATSL24 event this week was a blast. In between the brilliant sessions and networking, I also had the pleasure to join a great panel on the New Power of Privacy alongside Clare O'Brien, Radha Gohil, Benjamin Lanfry, Will King moderated by Lindsay Rowntree. Here are my key takeaways: 🍪 Privacy-compliant ID alternatives and other targeting methods exist, but they are either less scalable than traditional cookies or cannot fully address all marketing funnel needs (ex contextual advertising) 📚 Educating end users is crucial. We need to get better at explaining the data being gathered, why it's collected, and the consequential decisions tied to its use. 💰 Publishers bear most of the burden of compliance efforts. Stakes are high: Regulatory and reputational risk, commercial impact and reader trust. 🆗 User consent is gold, without it data becomes a liability. However, low opt-in rates are also due to poor UX with consent banners/CMPs, so improving that experience is key. 🤝 As we're maturing as an industry, collaboration amongst the different players is key. We must work together to build trust and transparency with the end users and introduce better standards amongst tech and supply chain.

Following the success of our 'Tech the Halls' TikTok-style videos, were planning to create similar content for Get Online Week. Our goal is to share daily tips focused on the Essential Digital Skills Framework. Some video ideas include: Using YouTube for tutorials, social media privacy, recognising scams, setting up email and sending attachments, understanding cookies, how Trading Standards can help you, identifying safe websites. These topics aren’t finalised, so if you have other ideas, we’d love to hear them.
