Spotlight time! Meet one of our incredible Breakthrough Collaborative affiliates. Breakthrough Cincinnati Inc. is increasing opportunity and driving change in education. As one of the hosts of our Breakthrough Effect events, they highlighted the incredible impact they're making in their community. Here’s how they changed lives in 2024 alone: - 220 students were served - 90% first-year retention rate - 85% of students felt capable of achieving their goals - 65% of their Teaching Fellows are BIPOC Breakthrough Cincinnati is proof of what’s possible when dedicated educators and mentors come together to unlock student potential. In the UK, women comprise just 16% of the engineering workforce. By age 35, 57% of female engineers leave engineering (compared to 17% of their male counterparts). It feels like a travesty to me that a sector that includes some of the brightest minds should haemorrhage talent this way just because they have procreated or that people who want to be more present for their children don't feel they can. Raise your hand if you have ever said "We aren't focusing on STEM right now, our focus is on literacy." If so, I hate to say it but you have just closed a door to someone getting access to STEM. I get it, I've been an administrator too and I see all of the different initiatives on ELA and Math that take over our worlds because that is where the testing occurs the most. However, we can't pick and choose which topic or domain is going to be the focus of the year. Great leadership looks at this from an interdisciplinary approach. Let's put the spotlight on ALISAL UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT. They get it! They are creating a makerspace for one of their school sites. However, it's not just the makerspace or just the curriculum. The principal and assistant superintendent of instruction are working in tandem to ensure that classroom teachers are integrating makerspace components into their lessons through an interdisciplinary approach. Empowering young future leaders 👧 I had the privilege of interacting with a group of incredibly bright and determined young tribal girls. Our session focused on their vital role in community development, "Role of girls in community development" and I was deeply impressed by their insightful ideas and unwavering spirit. Empowering these future leaders requires a holistic approach: ● Quality education: Access to quality education, including vocational training and digital literacy programs, is crucial for their intellectual and economic growth. ● Leadership development: Cultivating their leadership skills through mentorship programs, community engagement activities, and opportunities for self-expression. ● Capacity building: Equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to become agents of change within their communities. ● Promoting physical and mental well-being: Encouraging participation in sports and recreational activities to foster healthy lifestyles and build resilience. Breaking down barriers: Addressing societal challenges such as gender discrimination, lack of access to resources, and cultural limitations that hinder their progress. By investing in their education, nurturing their leadership potential, and creating an inclusive and supportive environment, we can empower these remarkable girls to become catalysts for positive change within their communities and beyond.

We have raised awareness and embedded ourselves in schools for the last 16 years in order to equip kids with the tools to extinguish social, psychological and emotional fires. In just under 2 months, we take our actions to a new height: 160 students from 8 different High Schools will embark on a 3-Day Youth Leadership Summit in The Green Mountains of Central Vermont. The students will start with a digital detox, turning in their smartphones for the duration of The Summit. The culmination of The Summit includes a portion of Spartan's “Death Race,” an extreme obstacle course in Killington, VT, providing a treacherous terrain that will require teamwork and resilience to complete. You might ask, "What’s the real point of this Youth Leadership Summit?" Our mission is to activate the influencers within a culture to give HOPE and take ACTION, and to empower high school students to become and subsequently teach elementary students how to become Sweethearts and Heroes.
