Signal the Philippines???? Just come out and say signal the US. It is not as if the Philippine Navy and Coastguard were a match for the PLN - and the new aircraft carrier tipped the scales in China's favour. "They" - "they caution that the current combined carrier fleet of the US and Japanese navies would make it ‘suicidal’ for China to try and take them on." The US has 10 aircraft carriers, assuming they can put 4 into the Pacific, they would still outnumber the PLN's combat aircraft. There is no need for the Japanese to get involved - at this point. But let's get serious - no one is going to war over the Spratlys. Accidents can happen, but neither the US or China is going to risk WW3 over the Spratlys. Or Philippines.

China’s military – bringing together modernisation and escalating aggression #bne #bneEditorsPicks #China In recent years, the PRC has escalated both maritime and aerial incursions into Taiwan's territory, including detaining a Taiwanese fishing boat, conducting patrols that crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line, and increasing harassment around Kinmen. More recently, following Taiwan’s National Day on October 10, Chinese air and naval forces surrounded Taiwan in Beijing’s most aggressive show of force to date. These actions build on a surge in air sorties violating Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), which rose from 972 in 2021 to 3,119 in 2022, and continued climbing through 2024.

'It is simply not credible to assert that these incidents are spontaneous or occur independently of the Chinese military chain of command. 'As with any form of bullying, maintaining silence in the face of it only empowers the bully. So Australia’s quick, clear and measured response to the latest incident is encouraging. 'China knows how highly Australia regards the wellbeing and safety of its service personnel. These incidents cumulatively test Canberra’s resolve to continue operating in China’s maritime periphery in peacetime. 'The government should therefore be careful to back [RAN chief, Vice-Admiral] Hammond. It should also pre-empt any Chinese perception that Canberra can be coerced into reining in defence operations, not only in Northeast Asia but also in conducting more joint patrols with the US, Japan and the Philippines in the South China Sea'. https://lnkd.in/g_FP69N6

This isn't surprising! If you consider the leverage Xi has over Putin, through China's support to Russia over the past 2 years, joint patrols should be expected for the foreseeable future. I imagine financing the pipeline came with an Arctic access requirement. (https://lnkd.in/eRDTRgVA) (https://lnkd.in/exGAk2it)

Russia has involved China in joint patrolling of the #NorthernSeaRoute For the first time, #ChineseCoastGuard ships jointly with Russian vessels conducted patrols in the Arctic Ocean, through which Russia's Northern Sea Route passes, the China Coast Guard Administration reported . During the mission, the Chinese ships tested their ability to carry out missions in unfamiliar waters and expanded the scope of long-distance ocean voyages. They also provided support for the country's active participation in international and regional maritime patrols, the department said. The Northern Sea Route is considered by Russian authorities as a promising route for transporting raw materials, including to China. After the start of the war in Ukraine, cargo transportation along it increased and exceeded 30 million tons of cargo per year. However, further growth in volumes was impossible due to Russia's lack of modern icebreakers. Russia and China have previously held several joint naval exercises. In July, training maneuvers were held in the Pacific Ocean. At that time, ships of the Chinese and Russian navies practiced patrolling in the South China Sea, which washes the southern part of Taiwan. In early September, China took part in the largest military exercises in Russia's modern history, Ocean 2024. They were held in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, the Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic Seas. The events involved over 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, more than 120 aircraft and helicopters, about 7 thousand units of weapons, military and special equipment, as well as 90 thousand military personnel. Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said that the fleet was tasked with playing out a scenario of "large-scale aggression by a potential enemy from ocean directions." The military also had to practice "conducting landing operations" and combating sea drones "taking into account the experience" of the war in Ukraine. At the end of September, another Russian-Chinese exercise, Beibu/Interaction 2024, was held in the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. The Russian side included the large anti-submarine ships Admiral Panteleyev and Admiral Tributs, the small anti-submarine ships MPK-82 and MPK-107, and the small missile ship Smerch of the Pacific Fleet. The Chinese Navy sent the destroyers Xining and Wuxi, the frigate Lin Yi, and the integrated supply ship Taihu to the exercises. https://lnkd.in/djDAfpbh

Video of a 2nd #China, #Russia joint air patrol on Nov. 30th over the western #Pacific #Ocean. First one was near Japanese Sea. Russian Aerospace Forces' Tu-95MS strategic missile bombers & the #PLA Air Force's H-6N bombers carried out air patrols over the waters of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean. Cover along the entire flight route was provided by #SU-30SM, #MiG-31 VKS of the Russian Federation and J-16 aircraft of the Chinese Air Force. During the joint air patrol, Russian aircraft landed and took off from an airfield in China. During the flight, the Tu-95MS crews performed in-flight refueling at night. A Russian Defense Ministry statement said that the aircraft acted strictly in accordance with the provisions of international law. No violations of foreign airspace were committed. "We have effectively tested and enhanced the capabilities of the two countries' air forces through joint training and operations." "The event was carried out as part of the implementation of the military cooperation plan for 2024 and is not directed against third countries". This joint air patrol follows a similar one on Nov. 29th. Two joint air patrols in 2 days is quite unusual.

𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗨𝗦, 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗮 On Wednesday 7 August, the Philippines, the United States, Canada and Australia commenced their first joint military exercises in the South China Sea, marking a significant development in regional security cooperation. This collaborative effort, a two-day sea and air exercise, underscores the participating nations' commitment to respond to China’s intimidating actions. The exercises are particularly notable given the strategic importance of the South China Sea. In this vital waterway, several territorial disputes have heightened tensions in recent years, especially due to its richness in fishing stocks. These drills are designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the involved forces (both naval and air units), focusing on maritime security, interoperability and freedom of navigation. The joint exercises demonstrate a unified stance among the four nations in ensuring the safety and stability of the region. In fact, in 2016, an international tribunal in The Hague said China's claims have no legal basis. By engaging in these activities, the countries aim to improve their ability to respond to any potential threats in these contested waters and show their commitment to upholding international law. The timing of these exercises is particularly significant as it comes amid ongoing disputes over territorial claims in the South China Sea, where China has been increasingly assertive. In fact, also yesterday, in a show of force China simultaneously carried out a combat patrol to test "strike capabilities" near Scarborough Shoal, an area of the South China Sea that is claimed by both China and the Philippines. As such, this joint effort reflects a broader strategy to counterbalance China's influence and claims in the region. #Army #Navy #Tanks #submarines as well "#Germany has recently lifted restrictions on the sale of #smallarms to #India as an exception to the country reflecting the growing strategic and military ties between the two countries, sources privy to the development said Friday." "Germany had earlier put restrictions over the sale of small arms to non-#NATO countries. However, the latest move to provide an exemption to India will pave the way for the sale of small arms from Germany to the Indian military and state police forces." "As per diplomatic sources, Germany has permitted the National Security Guard (NSG) to buy spare parts and accessories for MP5 submachine guns in its inventory earlier this month." "Germany is also in talks with India over providing engines for India’s future light tanks programme. This is, however, at an initial stage and is under consideration." "On the sale of six advanced conventional submarines to India for the Navy’s P-75I procurement programme for submarines, sources said a proposal for a government–to–government agreement between India and Germany is being examined. Earlier this month, an #IndianNavy team visited Germany to inspect the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP), offered by Germany. The team will inspect the AIP system of #Spanish #Navantia, which is also another contender for the submarine programme." #internationalrelations #weapons #DefenseIndustry https://lnkd.in/gqYBwaW7
