☎ We recently conducted a case study with a business that had been trying to hire a Principal (Individual Contributor, IC) Platform Engineer for 4 months. 📲 Ideally, I would have preferred to be contacted sooner (I had tried but blocked and told I'd never be needed 😂), but they reached out to Fireman DanOps due to a critical need. However, we encountered some initial hurdles. 1️⃣ First conversation: The talent team and hiring manager were disappointed with their preferred supplier list. My honest advice allowed us to help and offer some guidance. Positives: ✅ Content, branding, and values were all positive ✅ Candidate experience was prioritised Negatives: ❌ Salary was below market average for location ❌ Required 2 days in the office per week ❌ Required 10+ years of experience (an arbitrary requirement) ❌ Interview process included 3 stages (not bad), 2 of which were onsite 2️⃣ During the second conversation, we spoke with the hiring manager and the talent team again. They had taken some of my advice. ☑ No change in salary, but we provided relevant data for location and other regions ✅ Agreed to 2 days in the office per month after discussing case studies – this significantly expanded their talent pool - Also agreed to make arrangements if not possible for someone ✅ Got rid of the 10+ years of experience requirement by clearly defining the role of the IC in their business. ✅ The 3-stage interview process is now 1 onsite (agreed to make arrangements if not possible for someone) interview (final) with a 1-2 week turnaround, accommodating candidates' schedules This role was filled and the hiring manager introduced me to someone else needing to hire a IC.
