“Your most important work is always ahead of you, never behind you.” – Stephen Covey. Meet Epscan's future. We want to extend a big welcome to our newest team members, Arang, Marvin, Raj, Max, Noah, and Tyson, who were attending the Industrial Instrumentation and Process Control Technician program at BCIT! This is the first time that most of these guys have been to Fort St. John, and they were inspired to expand their skill set after watching a presentation by Epscan's Corporate Strategy Officer Shane Stirling. On the first day of their orientation, we sat down with these five eager individuals to see why they wanted to share their thoughts on the journey ahead. Here's what they shared: "A few older students who previously worked for Epscan gave some really good reviews and had good things to say about [the company]. I wanted just to come up here and see what it's all about." "I joined Epscan because I wanted to get the instrumentation. I wanted to get my hands into troubleshooting and learn about electrical work." "When Shane Stirling told us that all the journeymen have been here for a while, that stuck with me because I know I can ask them for help, and they'll help me out." "I'm looking forward to being here for a while so that I can improve my skills and then move on with my career." Best of luck in your new adventure, guys! I can't wait to hear about your experiences as part of the Epscan team. #longterm #careers #employeesmatter #hiring #living #gratitude #BCIT

Some good communication tips for both job seekers and employers. We have so many great communication tools today, we just need to use them.
Whether you're a job seeker or an EV employer, clear and effective communication is key to a successful experience. Here are some tips: 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬: •Be Timely: Respond to messages and interview requests promptly. It shows respect and keeps you top-of-mind. •Proofread: Typos can create a negative impression. Take the extra time to spell check and ensure your message is polished. •Open Communication: If you accept another offer, let the other company know. Transparency goes a long way. •Stay Connected: Even if you're not chosen, thank the interviewer for their time. You never know when paths might cross again. 𝐄𝐕 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬: •Show Respect: Respond to applications in a timely manner, even if it's a rejection. Leaving candidates hanging hurts your reputation. •Invest in Talent: Don't underestimate the value of top talent. Competitive compensation packages attract the best and brightest. •Craft Clear Job Descriptions: Outline expectations, responsibilities, and the impact of the role. This helps attract qualified candidates. •Provide Feedback: After interviews, offer constructive feedback to unsuccessful candidates. It shows you value their time and helps them improve. •Utilize Multiple Channels: Use a mix of email, calls, and internal communication tools to keep candidates informed throughout the hiring process. By prioritizing communication, both job seekers and EV employers can create a positive and productive experience in the exciting world of electric vehicles. When I received my first salary as Junior Field Service Engineer (see previous post for details), I decided to upgrade my PC. Office laptop I had from the beginning of student life was already too old and too weak for calculations and math models of my diploma. But the main reason I wanted this upgrade was that laptop was too weak for the games 😂 So I found used PC with 95-watt quad-core Intel and discrete video card. It was real monster for that time, and also had significant heating bonus. Luckily, owner of this PC lived not far from the campus, so we agreed to meet on weekend and I didn't need to get any transport. I bought the PC on sunny Saturday and carried it to the campus, enjoying the deal and the walk itself. But when I came to my room and plugged everything, I realised that I have several missed calls from my boss. "Why we were not able to reach you?" - boss asked after I called back. "I was busy bying new PC, and it's weekend" - I replied. I didn't expect any work this day. "You know, we are providing service to very demanding clients. You should be available even on weekends, because we might want to take you on urgent calls" - boss said. At that moment I understood that I will not work on such a job for a long, but I agreed to inform the boss about "busy weekends" when I'll be 100% unavailable. So, the second important lesson I took on this job: keeping work-life balance is your own responsibility. We are not obliged to fulfill all demands of our employer, but we need to protect our position. Moreover, we have to report to the boss only things mentioned in the contract, and in the rest we are free. For sure, for almost 1 year in field service I also enhanced some of my hard skills: work with electrical equipment, soldering, troubleshooting, installation, wiring and so on. It also helped me in future. But I've taken initial decision after that Saturday call. We ended collaboration on the winter low season, and I've never regretted about it. I don't recommend winter field service work at all 🙂

The amount of false leads and employer "gas lighting" has grown exponentially. For those of us who are actively searching for new career opportunities, this is very frustrating. If employers are not intending to hire within a reasonable amount of time, it would be best to refrain form posting said jobs until you are ready to actually hire. I know that some companies are putting the positions out there to see what kind of response you will be getting or you are hiring internally and required to post the position, but people are wasting their time and effort to apply, so please keep that in mind.
