🚀 New publication on social perspectives of Carbon Capture, Transportation, Utilization, and Storage (CCT(U)S) 🌍🔬 Achieving Switzerland's climate goals by 2050 requires addressing hard-to-abate emissions, and CCT(U)S technologies are essential for this. Globally, efforts are intensifying, and Switzerland is no exception. 🏔️ DemoUpCARMA & Storage – The Demonstration and Upscaling of CARbon dioxide Management solutions for a net-zero Switzerland – pilot project has delved into the feasibility of two CCT(U)S pathways: 1) CO2 utilization and permanent storage in recycled concrete in Switzerland. 2) CO2 transport and permanent storage in geological reservoirs in Iceland. Our study analysed these paths from a societal perspective and assessed the perception of the Swiss public through focus groups and an online survey. Here are some key findings: 📉 The Swiss public is generally unfamiliar with CCT(U)S and the specific pathways. 💡 Acceptance and support are driven by personal factors like climate change concerns. ⚖️ Perceived benefits and risks vary based on the capture, transportation, and storage processes. 📊 Infographics are preferred over text for conveying CCT(U)S information. France has announced its Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) strategy, setting a clear roadmap to reduce carbon emissions by capturing CO2 from industrial sources and storing or utilizing it. The release of this strategy positions France alongside other EU nations making significant strides in carbon management. The strategy focuses on unavoidable emissions and sets specific targets for the next decades: 4 to 8 megatons per year before 2030, 12-20 Mtpa by 2040 and with the development of a pan-European infrastructure by 2050, a goal of 30 to 50 Mtpa. Notably, RepAir Carbon Capture Carbon will play a pivotal role in these initiatives with our innovative, low-energy consuming carbon capture technology. In the guide you will learn what it means to build and operate a pyrolysis plant. Pyrolysis is a technology that allows to convert (waste) biomass into 1) renewable energy (heat and optional electricity), 2) biochar, and 3) carbon removal credits–all at the same time. 🌏 Negative Emissions: The Role of CO₂ Removal in Tackling #ClimateChange 🔥 ✨ Last week, hundreds of scientists gathered in Oxford to discuss various ways to remove Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere. This event, the Third International Conference on Negative CO₂ Emissions, focused on the latest science, policy gaps, and methods of CO₂ removal (#CDR). 🤝 The conference saw 360 scientists, researchers, and industry experts come together in person, with another 150 joining online. They discussed both “natural” and “novel” methods to capture and store CO₂ on land, underground, or in the ocean. Key takeaways included: 🔸#Forestry and #Biochar: These are the prominent methods for CO₂ removal. 🔸Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS): Though currently limited, it's a significant focus. 🔸#MarineCO₂Removal: An emerging area with potential. 📢 Dr. Steve Smith, the executive director of Oxford Net Zero and Co2re Global highlighted that traditional CDR methods, mainly through land-use changes, account for most of the current CO₂ removal. Novel methods, like biochar and BECCS, are still in their early stages but are crucial for future efforts. He stressed the urgency of scaling up CDR technologies responsibly, ensuring they are effective and environmentally sound. The discussions also covered how to measure and verify the success of these technologies. 💡 As we strive to limit #GlobalWarming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, CO₂ removal methods will play a crucial role.
