#Nurses can impact #healthpolicy! Check out these examples of ways nurses have changed the #healthcare delivery system. #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareonlinkedin
As we continue our legislative task force efforts, we were inspired by Dr. Melinda Kidder DHA, MSN, RN, CENP's session on Nurse-Led Advocacy. It highlighted some remarkable achievements driven by #nurses that have already made a significant impact on healthcare policy: 1. Lymphedema Treatment Act: Nurses actively raised awareness about lymphedema and its treatment needs, sharing patient stories and lobbying for equitable insurance coverage, which ultimately led to the passage of this vital legislation. 2. Palliative Care and Cancer Drug Parity: Nurses advocated for this act by highlighting the importance of equitable access to palliative care and oral cancer medications, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive and compassionate care. 3. Title VII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act: Nurses participated in grassroots efforts to secure funding for nursing education and workforce development, recognizing that a strong nursing workforce is essential for quality healthcare. These are just a few great examples that illustrate the powerful role nurses play in shaping healthcare policy and advocating for the needs of patients. 💪❤️ We must keep advocating for the needs of our profession and how it links to the greater healthcare system. Study Alert: Reduced RN Staffing Increases Patient Risks A new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, published in Medical Care, has found that reduced RN staffing levels in hospitals significantly impact patient outcomes. The research, which looked at 6.5 million Medicare patients across 2,676 general acute care hospitals in the U.S., reveals some concerning trends. Even modest substitutions of RN care with lower-wage personnel can lead to higher readmission rates, increased mortality, longer hospital stays, and decreased patient satisfaction. This underscores the critical role that RNs play in patient care. How do you think hospitals should prioritize staffing to ensure the best patient care while maintaining efficiency?
