How to Handle Four Common Types of Team Conflict... Conflict on a team is inevitable, and it can manifest in four distinct ways. Here’s what each type of conflict looks like and how to resolve it. Individual-level conflict is when one team member is difficult, disengaged, loves playing devil’s advocate, or generally causes tension on the team. If your team experiences this kind of conflict, make sure you don’t scapegoat or gang up on the individual. Instead, start by asking them sincere questions to try to understand their perspective and build empathy toward them. Dyad conflict is when tension, conflict, or animosity between two individuals affects the rest of the team. In this situation, mediation may help. Meet with each individual separately and then together to let them express their feelings and come to a resolution. Subgroup conflict is when two subgroups within the team are in opposition, each with a different goal, project, or outcome. The best way to handle this scenario is to bring in an external mediator to challenge the group’s thinking, presenting compromises or alternate options. Team-wide conflict is when everyone is in disagreement, usually in response to poor team performance. To resolve this kind of conflict, return to the basics: Reemphasize the team’s overall goal, vision, and identity.

Experiencing conflict at work, at home, or within a team? I recently worked with a client on conflict resolution to enhance their people team experience. Though the two stakeholders didn't have a relationship or mutual ground, I asked them to work through the "issues" using this framework. If you’re experiencing conflict at work, here is a tool for you. "A problem clearly stated is a problem half solved." -- Dorothea Brande A few tips: - Meet in a neutral space, outdoors or near sun is ideal. - Use a mediator as necessary. - Set ground rules and define what "respect” looks like for all parties, include verbal and non-verbal communication. - Take time to review and fill out the top portion on your own. Resolution is easier when you can clearly state the problem. - Use a (2 min) timer to limit over-talking, promote clear communication, and to be time conscious. - The goal is to come to a temporary resolve (think spare tire), and then build upon your current relationship and agreement. YES -- you can also use this framework in your interpersonal relationships and in teams. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a message. Good luck good people! #ConflictResolution #Framework #PeopleTeams

Addressing conflict ASAP is crucial! First off, try to understand the root cause. Sometimes it's miscommunication or differences in approach. Taking the time to identify what's really going on before trying to address is really effective in trying to set the conversation up for success. Open up a dialogue with the team member causing the conflict in a neutral setting. Listen actively, and express your concerns calmly. Paraphrasing what they say can show that you're truly listening and trying to understand! Collaboratively find a solution or compromise that respects everyone's perspective. Use "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory. For example, instead of saying "You're causing problems," try "I've noticed some tension, and I'm concerned about how it might affect the team's productivity." If the issue persists, involve a mediator or escalate to higher management. Remember, resolving conflict can be reframed as an exciting opportunity to strengthens teams and create a healthier work environment!
