🌟 Revisiting the Dependency of Indonesia’s 5-Star Hotels on Foreign Guests in 2023 🌟 Three years ago, we explored the extent to which Indonesia's premier accommodations depended on international visitors. As we emerge further from global travel restrictions, it's time to reevaluate the landscape of the 5-star hospitality industry across the archipelago. Current Trends: High Dependency: Kep. Riau and Bali remain highly reliant on international tourism, though their foreign guest percentages have seen changes, now at 75.8% and 66.2%, respectively. Nusa Tenggara Barat also continues to feature prominently with a substantial 40.8%. Balanced Dependency: Jakarta’s dependency has slightly decreased but remains significant at 32.3%. Nusa Tenggara Timur has also adjusted to 41.9%, showing continued reliance on foreign tourism. Looking Forward: The path to recovery remains multifaceted. While domestic demand has buoyed the industry, the true resurgence, particularly in high-dependency areas like Bali and Kep. Riau, hinges on the return of medium and long-haul international flights. The resilience and adaptation of domestic markets will be critical as we navigate the evolving dynamics of global travel. As we continue to monitor these shifts, our strategies must adapt to not only recover but thrive in the coming years. Sometimes you get to have a meeting in a gorgeous location! Sadly was just for the day, but it was great to get to Bali for the first time since the pandemic and get a pulse on the latest in the tourism industry there. I had the pleasure of joining Lucy Christie and team from Marriott for a discussion on regional travel trends. At Visa Consulting & Analytics (VCA) we have a model which allows us to take patterns of card spend and estimate both overall travel volumes and spending patterns. We can do this at quite a granular level, such as by city or by category type. When we took a look at Indonesia, and Bali specifically, a few insights stood out: - Visitors from Mainland China make up a bigger share of visitors in Jakarta than pre-pandemic, likely due to rising Chinese strategic investment in the Indonesian economy in sectors such as Nickel - In contrast, visits from Mainland China to Bali are down, both in absolute terms and as a share, while those from India have risen markedly and will likely be the biggest single origin over the next year - Indonesia has just overtaken NZ as the most popular destination for Australian tourists - Visitors to Indonesia are spending a bigger share of budget on restaurants and hotels as compared to the Asia-Pacific average - Looking at Asia's top 10 travel corridors, five of them have cheap shopping as a key driver (eg HK-Mainland China, Singapore-Malaysia, Mainland China-Japan)

Great to be back in Jakarta for the Tech In Asia summit! And Bali real estate is never far from being discussed. The “Lesson from the Brink” session provided insights from those who navigated the hospitality industry through the pandemic’s toughest days. Key Takeaways from Daniel Rouquette and Amit Saberwal's Discussion: 1. Strengthening domestic market: Local tourism has helped sustain the industry through international travel restrictions. 2. Quick recovery in luxury travel: The luxury segment returned faster and performed better than ever. 3. Rise of staycations due to international travel being limited. Today, the domestic market represents 65% of the tourism in Bali. Don't forget that if you plan to do business in the Island of Gods. #techinasia #balirealestate #hospitality

🌍 Surge in Domestic Tourism Across Indonesia: A 2024 Snapshot 🌍 Indonesia's domestic tourism sector is witnessing a fascinating trend in the period January-July 2024, with a remarkable 18% overall growth in domestic trips compared to the same period in 2023. However, the distribution of this growth is far from uniform, revealing key insights into the evolving dynamics of travel across the archipelago. 🔍 Key Highlights: Top Performers: Provinces like Maluku (129%), Papua Selatan (124%), Papua Barat Daya (120%), and Papua Barat (117%) have seen explosive growth, with more than double the number of domestic trips. This underscores a burgeoning interest in exploring Indonesia's more remote and less-traveled regions. Negative Growth: Conversely, established regions like Sulawesi Tenggara (-4%) and Sulawesi Barat (-3%) have experienced a decline, which may signal shifting traveler preferences or the need for rejuvenated tourism strategies in these areas. Moderate Growth in Popular Destinations: Traditional hotspots such as Bali (14%) and Banten (14%) continue to grow but at a more measured pace, indicating a possible saturation or a plateau in visitor numbers. Emerging Growth Hubs: Nusa Tenggara Timur (54%), Aceh (47%), and Sumatera Utara (45%) are emerging as new growth hubs, attracting significant attention and travel from domestic tourists. 🔗 Insight: There is a notable negative correlation (-0.45) between the absolute number of trips in for the period in 2024 and the percentage growth. This suggests that provinces with historically lower tourist numbers are now experiencing the most rapid growth, while more established regions see steadier, if slower, increases. This data reveals a potential shift in Indonesia’s tourism landscape, where untapped regions are gaining traction and could redefine the future of domestic travel. For tourism stakeholders, understanding these patterns is crucial for adapting strategies to both capitalize on emerging markets and sustain growth in traditional areas. 📎 (Source: BPS Statistics - Indonesia & PT Hotel Investasi Strategis) #IndonesiaTourism #DomesticTravel #MarketTrends #TourismStrategy #EmergingMarkets #TravelGrowth
