Did you know that Singaporeans were the first in the world to be able to make mobile phone calls in an underground train system? 1G technology made mobile phone calls possible. Singapore’s 1G network was launched in 1987 – and Comcentre, Singtel’s old HQ, was one of the network’s first base stations. “It was chosen for its strategic height and its location in a centralised area,” shared Lim Siew Meng as he revisited the building’s iconic rooftop space frame. He was part of the networks team at the time. Stay tuned as we continue to share new reflections every week, celebrating our 145 years of communication. You can still get your own copy of Voices from Comcentre for S$25 at select Singtel stores until 31 December 2024. All proceeds go to the Singtel Touching Lives Fund. This fund supports six special education schools which play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of students with special needs. #Singtel #EmpowerEveryGeneration #VoicesFromComcentre #Innovation

Big Move in Telecoms Sector! 📡 Exciting news in the world of telecommunications as LH Telecoms Limited, a UK-based firm, has acquired a majority stake in 9Mobile, a notable Nigerian telco. This acquisition, which garnered approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), marks a significant shift for the struggling company. With this new investment comes a change in leadership; Obafemi Banigbe has been appointed as the new CEO, and Thomas Etuh, founder of the Tak Group of Companies, will serve as the Chairman of the Board. This transition couldn't come at a more crucial time, as 9Mobile has been facing substantial challenges, losing over 6,443 subscribers in the first quarter of 2024 alone. However, with the capital injection from LH Telecoms and a newly robust board consisting of seasoned professionals from various sectors, I'm optimistic they will steer the company towards a promising recovery. As someone who has been in the recruitment industry for 15 years, I can appreciate the importance of strategic leadership during a turnaround. #Telecoms #IndustryNews #LeadershipTransition

Hey everyone! There's some exciting news in the telecoms world today. 🚀 First up, Digi Communications has made a bold move by acquiring Portuguese network operator Nowo. With Vodafone's previous attempt thwarted by the Portuguese competition watchdog, all eyes are on Digi to see if they can shake up the market. This acquisition could mean more competitive prices and improved services for Portuguese consumers. In the Philippines, Globe Telecom-backed Mynt, known for its digital payments platform GCash, has attracted new investments, pushing its valuation to a whopping $5 billion. New stakeholders like Ayala Corporation and MUFG are joining the fold, which speaks volumes about the potential growth in the fintech space there. Mynt's success is a boost not only to its investors but also to the financial inclusion of many underserved Filipinos. On the UK front, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is taking a bit longer to make a final decision on the Vodafone UK and Three merger. This £16.5 billion deal could reshape the UK telecoms landscape, reducing the number of major players to just three. With the extended review period, the final verdict is eagerly anticipated. It's clear that the telecoms industry is buzzing with activity and shifts in the market. Whether it's through acquisitions, new investments, or potential mergers, the sector continues to evolve rapidly. #Telecoms #TechNews #Investments

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister, Parks Tau, has acknowledged the recent order by the Competition Tribunal, which formally prohibits the proposed acquisition of a 30% stake in Maziv by Vodacom. This ruling aligns with the Competition Commission’s recommendation to prevent the merger, emphasizing concerns that the consolidation could undermine competition in the rapidly expanding 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and fibre infrastructure markets. Maziv, which consolidates major fibre players like Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa (DFA), is a significant player, and merging with Vodacom, the country’s largest mobile network operator, would potentially create a dominant force in South Africa’s digital landscape. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ https://lnkd.in/d5wc8hk9

This should be the vision of the any developed country telco owner in this decade.
A best-in-class 5G network would provide a much-needed economic boost to the public purse, saving £580 million of taxpayer money, while also helping to decarbonise the public estate. With rising costs and constrained budgets, councils across the UK are feeling the squeeze and communities are suffering as a consequence. We know how important public spaces are to local towns and communities, so we must protect them. This is why as part of the proposed merger, Vodafone UK and Three UK have committed to rolling out 5G Standalone at pace, investing £11 billion over ten years and delivering 5G SA to 99% of the UK population by 2034. As part of this, Vodafone UK and Three UK have also committed to delivering 5G SA to every school and hospital across the nation by 2030. https://lnkd.in/ewAYtPjR #TogetherWeCan #TheNationsNetwork #Connectitivy #5GSA #PublicSector
