SMRT Corp will play a key role in the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, connecting commuters from Woodlands North Station to the rest of Singapore. The Temasek-owned company operates four businesses: SMRT Trains, SMRT Buses, Strides taxi services, and SMRT RTS, which ensures it can manage increased commuter traffic effectively. In 2020, SMRT RTS formed a joint venture with Malaysia’s Prasarana RTS Operations to create RTS Operations (RTSO), which will manage the RTS Link. RTSO has a 30-year concession to operate and maintain the RTS Link, connecting Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North. SMRT chairman Seah Moon Ming describes the RTS Link as a “game-changer” that will improve connectivity and generate shared economic and social benefits. Construction is underway, with 77.61% completed as of May 31. SMRT is expected to benefit from increased commuter traffic due to the direct connection between the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and RTS. Despite financial challenges and privatisation in 2016, SMRT has shown improved financial performance post-pandemic, with revenue growth and increased profit after tax in FY2023. Looking ahead, SMRT aims to expand internationally, targeting investments in Australia and Europe while maintaining its core public transport services in Singapore.
