You’ve mapped out your processes. You’ve chosen the right system. Now it’s time to use it. But how do you ensure it actually works for your team? The key to making a system work is simple: everyone needs to use it the same way. That’s where standardized operating procedures (SOPs) come in. 📝 When you create clear instructions, a few things happen: Consistency: Everyone follows the same process, avoiding confusion and chaos. No more guessing how things should be done. Seamless Transitions: If someone leaves, or a new team member joins, they follow the SOPs and can jump right in. No gaps, no mess. That’s the goal of a system – it’s reliable, and it keeps things running smoothly. But here’s the truth: using a system is an evolving process. Even after you’ve mapped your workflow and adjusted the system to fit, you’ll still need to tweak it along the way. Different people work in different ways. So, what works for one might need adjustments for another. This is why continuous feedback from your team is crucial. 📊 Your goal is productivity. If some aspects of the system aren’t working, don’t be afraid to adjust the process. Systems aren’t set in stone - they evolve with your team’s needs. Business Agility using SAFe weekly series (11 of 52) Measuring Success in SAFe: Outcomes, Flow, and Competency Business Agility requires organizations to quickly respond to market changes and emerging opportunities with innovative, digitally-enabled business solutions. This requires reliable measures to assess current state and identify what needs to improve. SAFe’s three measurement domains, Outcomes, Flow, and Competency, provides a comprehensive yet simple model for measuring progress towards this goal. Outcome: Focus on measuring the impact of your work on the business. Key metrics include customer satisfaction, NPS, market share, value delivery and financial performance. Linking outcome metrics to OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) is recommended to ensure alignment with strategic goals. Another key outcome metrics is employee engagement. Engaged employees are more productive, innovative, and committed to the organization’s goals. Some key metrics for measuring employee engagement include Employee satisfaction surveys, Turnover rates, Absenteeism rates. Flow: Measure the efficiency and effectiveness of your value delivery process. Key metrics include lead time, cycle time, throughput and deployment frequency. Flow metrics are typically divided in 6 categories Flow Distribution, Velocity, Time, Load, Efficiency and Predictability. Aspects of DORA metrics like lead time, deployment frequency are well aligned to flow metrics. Competency: Assess the capabilities and skills of your teams. Metrics include team member certifications, technical skills assessments, and Agile maturity assessments. SAFe Business Agility Assessment can be leveraged to measure competency. By tracking these three domains, you can gain valuable insights into your SAFe implementation and identify areas for improvement.
