Until recently I'd have said that soaring private motor insurance premiums were an inevitable consequence of the perfect storm of inflationary pressures in our economy and supply chain issues caused by regional conflicts and Brexit, plus the FCA's rules on 'price walking' meaning the upping of premiums in general rather than the reduction of renewal premiums (it didn't really need a genius to foresee that happening). And then my wife had to make a claim on her motor insurance for damage to her Mini caused by a hit-and-run in a car park. Thankfully passers-by saw it happen and took photos of the offending vehicle so my wife was able to report the perpetrator to the police as well as to Aviva. Aviva's 'Approved Repairer' asked if my wife's car was driveable. "Well there's bits hanging off it so I'm not really happy driving it", she said. "OK we'll provide you with a hire car until yours is repaired", they replied. And so this (Mercedes) hire car turns up in a jiffy, which it turned out was the only thing that happened quickly! The faffing-about with the repairer getting the Mini assessed and then booked-in and finally repaired took several weeks. I'm sure we could have got it all done much quicker at a local garage. And then once the Mini was returned to us (with additional damage - but that's another story!!) it took several more days for the hire car to be collected. I was seething! All I could think about was the car hire company racking-up unnecessary daily hire charges, conveniently being paid by an insurance company, so they weren't bothered how long it took; the longer the better, from their point of view. I hate to think how many hundreds of pounds in unnecessary hire car charges were being paid out (of the premiums we're all paying). If this practice is commonplace (and I believe it probably is) then it stinks. It's akin to a scam.
