I feel like people are over April Fools. Maybe because it was a bank holiday. Maybe because our bull s*it meter is sensitive. Maybe because the world is absurd anyway. But it feels like this year brands decided to leave April Fools alone, and those that didn’t, didn’t really fool anyone. What was once a media moment fuelled by news outlets worldwide has become another excuse for brands to talk about them. I remember waking up one morning and seeing a story on BBC News about spaghetti trees. That was peak April Fools. Today we’re less gullible, more cynical and harder to distract. That’s actually why I think brands need to market like it’s April Fools every day. And see throigh those absurd promises. That’s what the ‘Entertain or Die’ mantra is all about. Nothing is a great example of a brand doing just that. (The phone challenger brand beat Samsung in our Entertaiment Index ranking). They released a branded beer on April Fools last year but then actually released it. Liquid Death similarly release ads that all feel like April Fools pranks - but they’re not.
