Microsoft did its 3rd round of layoffs in 2024, here's what you can do to effectively navigate "the new" tech industry: Embrace Productive Agent Based AI - learn to build products and automate business processes. Talented indy developers who are able to build end to end products in their domains of choice are at a tremendous advantage, and will be the first ones to bounce back from layoffs. Since companies doing mass layoffs are largely profitable, it's clear that part of the layoffs is a big-picture strategy to re-hire AI-enabled and AI-development-ready professionals. Companies are still hiring innovators, a few of the job-seeker clients I'm working with in the AI field are consistently booking 3-5 interviews a week. I noticed the above case-in-point when I launched Resume Sidekick, an AI companion to help job seekers land more interviews. 20+ people signed up for our services on the first day, and less than a week later I had more than 10 glowing reviews. Head-hunters and decision makers were in my DM's too, trying to find "synergies" and collaboration opportunities. In a pre-AI world, I wouldn't have been able to serve so many customers in such short time. But with Generative AI and coding skills, I was able to put together an ensemble of AI agents and a software system to coordinate them to allow me to run my resume optimization shop. The best startups, the ones that will end up being household names in the next 5 years are either still in their infancy or yet to be created. Let's go out and build the next big thing.

I can't help but think about the ripple effect these layoffs have on the entire ecosystem. Sure, it's easy to brush it off as just another day in the tech world, but let's zoom out for a moment and consider the broader impact. First off, it's not just numbers on a balance sheet. We're talking about real people with families and livelihoods. It's a tough pill to swallow, especially when you hear about the reasons behind the layoffs. Reorganization, efficiency drives, you name it. But it's not just about the employees directly affected. It's about the larger community. And let's not forget the psychological toll. Uncertainty breeds anxiety, and with job security constantly hanging in the balance, it's hard for employees to focus on doing their best work. It's not just about the tech sector anymore infact it's about the ripple effect on other industries and the overall economic landscape. So, what's the solution? Well, there's no easy fix, that's for sure. It's about finding ways to innovate without sacrificing the human element. In the end, we're all in this together. 🎉 Today, Peter and I welcome our first full-time hire: Rick Moore! Rick is someone I worked with five years ago at a previous company. In fact, I tell a story involving him often. It's not a good story, but one you can learn from. Rick joined us via an acquisition our company made. He was initially in the marketing department but had taught himself to code. He asked to speak with me and said he was interested in switching careers to become a software developer. We made it happen, and Rick started working with me. Rick picked up skill after skill. A year in, it was clear he was a fast learner and would be a great software developer. And that’s when I went wrong. Rick had well exceeded his current role. He asked how to move up. We didn’t have well-defined roles, and leadership was skeptical about moving him up quickly because he was initially a marketing employee. I knew this was wrong. Rick was doing the work and was someone we didn’t want to lose. I could give anything to him, and he would get it done. I made this argument. But I was still a young dev leader and lacked confidence and conviction. And so my arguments failed, and I stopped pushing. I explained to him that he would have to wait, but I didn’t have a good reason for it. Rick moved on to a better opportunity that recognized his skills & contributions. Honestly, part of me was happy he was getting what he deserved. But, mostly, I was sad I let him down. Luckily, throughout the years, we have stayed in touch. Rick has an entrepreneurial drive. He also loves to read. As Patrick Lencioni would put it, he is the ideal team player. Hungry, humble, and smart. And he resonates with our company values: Uncomfortable Focus, Apple Quality, and Start the Clock. And so, I could not be happier to welcome Rick as DevClarity’s first full-time employee! We now get to work on building a tool that would have helped me keep Rick in the first place. A tool that gives dev leaders, especially young ones, confidence and conviction. So, Rick, let’s build something great together!
