Many years ago, someone in the UK asked me whether they should prioritise school breakfast or school dinners and whether the focus should be on primary or secondary. In reality, in the UK, many children rely on both. Across the UK schools often teach core subjects, where cognitive load is high, in the morning. So if a child arrives at school without having eaten breakfast, then waiting until lunch will not support their learning across the morning. Likewise, missing lunch will not support academic subjects taught in the afternoon. New research shows that the first 8000 days are important for physical, cognitive and emotional development so the same principles apply to secondary schools. Often secondary schools are not included in universal free school meal initiatives or they are left facing a 'roll out' that never seems to come. So, if the UK government finances prevent a roll out of universal free school meals, then perhaps the UK government should change the means tested criteria for FSM in England so more primary and secondary may benefit, but not by taking away school breakfast clubs, after school provision or school holiday provision. If school food is going to make a significant impact on improving educational attainment, narrowing the attainment gap, and support childrens health and wellbeing then politicians need to start asking the 'right' questions so we can implement culturally appropriate, effective and coherent school food solutions that will have a positive impact on childrens health and education. As a young person said, "We are an investment, not a cost". (Miley, 2022, LeadingLink).

Government to Change School Lunch Program in New Zealand The New Zealand government is changing its school lunch program to feed more children for less money. Here's the gist: More kids get lunches: The program will include an additional 10,000 children aged 2-5 in early learning services. Lower cost lunches: Schools will get food from the government at a discount. Lunches may be simpler (think sandwiches and fruit instead of couscous and hummus). Parents can also choose to pack lunches. Changes for older kids: This new system applies to students from year 7 and above. Primary school lunches (years 0-6) remain unchanged. What do YOU think? Is this a win-win for cost and choice, or a recipe for unhealthy lunches? Comment! #school lunches #NZ #education #healthy eating P.S. Share this post if you think all Kiwi kids deserve a decent lunch! #lunchtime

Public Sector Catering today Chancellor announces launch of £7m breakfast club pilot scheme 25th Sep 2024 - 07:00 The Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that up to 750 schools with primary aged pupils will be invited to take part in a £7 million breakfast club pilot. The funding will allow these schools to run free breakfast clubs for their pupils in the summer term (April-July 2025). The Department for Education will work with the schools to understand how breakfast clubs can be delivered to meet the needs of schools, parents and pupils when the programme is rolled out nationally. Reeves commented: “Our promise, led by our Education Secretary Bridget Philipson is to introduce free breakfast clubs in every primary school across England. I can announce that that will start in hundreds of schools for primary school aged pupils from this April ahead of the national rollout. "An investment in our young people. An investment in reducing child poverty. An investment in our economy. And an investment so that in years to come we can proudly say that we left behind a Britain where the next generation has a chance to do better than those who came before it. Conference that is the Britain that we're building. That is the Britain that I believe in.” Thie breakfast club pilot scheme aims to help reduce the number of pupils starting the school day hungry and ensures children come to school ready to learn. It will also support the Government’s aim to tackle child poverty by addressing rising food insecurity among children. Jacquie Bance de Vasquez, director of policy and engagement at Magic Breakfast, said: “We welcome the announcement of a pilot to test and understand how the Government’s commitment to school breakfast provision can best be rolled out. “It will be key that there are a variety of schools, with different geographic and socio-economic challenges, adequate support to maximise the impact of provision for pupils, and a robust impact monitoring framework to guide and enable learning. This is a vital opportunity for the Department for Education to understand how they ensure that no child is too hungry to learn, and that all the benefits of breakfast are realised." 🍽️ The Fight for Universal Free School Meals in Nevada 🍽️ This video sheds light on the current debate surrounding the veto of the $43 million extension of pandemic-era Universal Free School Meals in Nevada. The veto has put immense pressure on school districts like Washoe County, which is now forced to tap into its general budget to ensure students are fed. Despite Governor Lombardo's claim that the program contributes to food waste, fact-checkers have called this assertion misleading. With nearly 80% of students in Nevada benefiting from free meals, it's clear that access to food plays a crucial role in their ability to succeed in school. 💬 The question is, should all students have access to free meals, regardless of income, to support their education? What are your thoughts on the balance between budget concerns and the essential need to feed our kids? Watch the full report for more insights into this important issue! #Education #SchoolMeals #Nevada #PublicPolicy #StudentSuccess #ChildNutrition

Yesterday we celebrated Hear the Crunch. Today, we need everyone to show their support for universal school meals in D.C. Access to nutritious, filling meals in school is crucial for our children's health and educational outcomes. Investing in programs like universal school meals can help ensure every child has the access they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Research shows that school breakfasts reduce hunger and improve wellness among school-aged children. They also improve academic performance, reduce behavioral problems, boost children's diets, and help reduce obesity. Moreover, universal school meals support jobs and financial viability for school nutrition departments, enhancing our human infrastructure as we build a more equitable economy. Join us in urging D.C. Council to pass and fully fund Universal School Meals in the fiscal year 2025 Budget. Use the Universal School Meals Action Alert to make your voice heard. Let's work together to guarantee that every child in D.C. has access to nutritious meals and a brighter future. #universalschoolmeals #childnutrition #NSBW

Consider an education policy for your children.
We joined the world to celebrate our children yesterday 27th May, being World Children's Day. Children have always looked forward to this day. It is the day we intentionally celebrate them, showing them how much we love them. Some organizations such as FRSC used the day to enroll some school children into their corps. Congratulations to my son & others. Some initiatives like the "Catch Them Young Initiative" were also introduced. A lot of interviews were made to some children on Television and Radio about their Education and Careers. We now see that these wonderful children have their dreams to live but at times their dreams die when their breadwinner dies. very unfortunate. Nobody prays for that but death they say is inevitable. So we must secure our children's dreams by guaranteeing their education. Do you know that EDUCATION is the best LEGACY you can give your children? Do not pretend & turn your face away that the majority of the children on the street begging, hawking, and endangering their lives are school drop out as a result of these unforeseen circumstances. Ask for more detailed information in the comment section on how your children's education can be secured/guaranteed. Get for your children, an Education Policy. Happy Children's Day to our future leaders. #dillasinsurancebrokersltd #childrensday2024 #EducationPolicy #insurancepolicy #insurancebroker #FRSC #CatchThemYoung #children #education www.dillasbrokers.com
