Spanish Shipbuilder Navantia Buys Harland and Wolff at Knocked-Down Price Navantia, S.A., S.M.E, a Spanish state-owned shipbuilding company, has acquired Harland & Wolff, the historic shipyard behind the Titanic, at a reduced price. This deal saves around 1,000 jobs across the UK and secures the future of Harland and Wolff's four shipyards in Scotland, Devon, and Belfast. As part of the agreement, Navantia will take control of Harland and Wolff's yards and will work on a £1.6 billion contract to build three Royal Navy support ships. The vessels will be constructed at Harland and Wolff's yards in Belfast and Devon, as well as Navantia's main site in Cadiz. The UK government has welcomed the deal, stating that it's a "major vote of confidence" in the UK's shipbuilding industry. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP said the deal will "guarantee our sovereign shipbuilding capability" and protect jobs across the country.
