Spanish Shipbuilder Navantia Buys Harland and Wolff at Knocked-Down Price Navantia, S.A., S.M.E, a Spanish state-owned shipbuilding company, has acquired Harland & Wolff, the historic shipyard behind the Titanic, at a reduced price. This deal saves around 1,000 jobs across the UK and secures the future of Harland and Wolff's four shipyards in Scotland, Devon, and Belfast. As part of the agreement, Navantia will take control of Harland and Wolff's yards and will work on a £1.6 billion contract to build three Royal Navy support ships. The vessels will be constructed at Harland and Wolff's yards in Belfast and Devon, as well as Navantia's main site in Cadiz. The UK government has welcomed the deal, stating that it's a "major vote of confidence" in the UK's shipbuilding industry. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP said the deal will "guarantee our sovereign shipbuilding capability" and protect jobs across the country. It’s brilliant to see that A&P Tyne, Hebburn yard secured a visit from Alison McGovern MP and as a Birkenhead MP for her to signal the desire to see the return of shipbuilding. I am long invested in this, I was there for the final shift leaving Swan Hunter, despite the huge amount of work led by former Newcastle East MP Nick Brown. I have worked with industry and the public making the case for the marine industry as well as oil and offshore. It’s all about action and outcomes. I led the work for the A&P Tyne yard in the lobbying government to secure much needed work for the aircraft carrier, ensuring security of the yard and job creation. What a result this was for the company and the region. ( see below) https://lnkd.in/eYcDFCtT So this is a long held passion of mine. It’s the reason why I have never let up on the need for a long term dredge solution for the River Tyne, and for the lifting of the cables - my first correspondence to government on this issue was 1992, and we have seen numerous governments fail to grasp this economic opportunity. Today I feel a glimmer of hope through the work of the task group is pressed to establish Tyne First, and the development of the first regional industrial strategy. This is also why I went to the line on securing the green super port in the devolution deal. I’m sadly no longer in a role of influence but I’ll certainly be making sure to hold all who are to the task. UK content. UK quality. Long term, quality jobs which would run through generations. This is our opportunity to redefine the North East.

Work starts on new ship at historic Scottish shipyard The first steel has been cut for “the UK’s newest warship”, HMS Sheffield, at BAE Systems’ Govan shipyard in Glasgow. Eight Type 26 frigates will be built on the Clyde, with the work sustaining nearly 2,000 jobs in Scotland and 4,000 jobs across the wider UK maritime supply chain for decades to come. Simon Lister, managing director of BAE Systems' Naval Ships business, said: "This is a proud moment for our talented teams across the UK who play their part in the design and construction of these important vessels. "HMS Sheffield’s construction will benefit from a range of investments, which are transforming our digital and physical infrastructure and will consolidate a centre of excellence for UK shipbuilding in Glasgow. "I’d like to thank our customers and suppliers for their support and commitment as we take this programme forward together and deliver next generation frigates for the Royal Navy." Of the other four Type 26 vessels already under construction, HMS Belfast and HMS Birmingham are being fabricated at Govan. HMS Glasgow and HMS Cardiff are undergoing outfit at Scotstoun where complex systems will be installed before test and commissioning takes place. HMS Glasgow, the first ship in class, is expected to enter service in 2028. https://lnkd.in/eY6J_Pii #maritimeconnection #shipbuilding #ISeaSMEs #socsea National Shipbuilding Office

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Wants Maersk to Order American-Made Ships. In a meeting in Denmark last week, U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro had an unusual suggestion for A.P. Moller-Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc, one of the world's most prominent shipowners: Del Toro recommended that Clerc buy American-made ships to join Maersk's exclusively foreign-built fleet. The call is in line with Del Toro's attempt to attract allied help to "renew the health of [America's] broader seapower ecosystem." Del Toro has invited Korean shipbuilders to acquire or open shipyards in the U.S. market, hoping to fix over-budget, behind-schedule naval shipbuilding programs. A signal of demand from a large private shipowner might spark business interest in modernizing American shipyards, he suggested. "With some of the world’s most technologically advanced shipbuilders already heeding our call to invest in integrated commercial and naval shipbuilding facilities in the United States, the next step in our maritime statecraft strategy is to attract the world’s foremost commercial shipping firms to signal their demand for new ships built in American shipyards," Secretary Del Toro said. https://lnkd.in/e662MXyW

Good! Finally, another viable shipyard on the East Coast! Watch this begin to drive prices of auxiliaries down, as I'm sure they'll bid on those types of vessels first. I wouldn't be surprised if they totally revamp the shipyard and make it a player for the LSM (Landing Ship, Medium) and other series-built programs. This purchase likely places pressure on the smaller defense shipyards, such as Austal, Bollinger, Fincantieri and NASSCO. In future years, they may place pressure on Bath Iron Works and HII. They'll hire more Americans to expand and work at the yard and produce more ships. All good for our nation, the community around the shipyard, and our economic and workforce development goals. #Maritime #Shipbuilding #NationalShipbuildingStrategy #HanwhaOcean #PhillyShipyard #USNavy #EconomicDevelopment #WorkforceDevelopent
