❓ What if I tell my supervisor? Do I still need to call DHHR? In short — yes. WV Code §49-2-803 requires that mandatory reporters notify the administration of their organizations as well as DHHR. Reporting to a supervisor or school administrator DOES NOT fulfill your legal duty as a mandatory reporter. You must file a direct report by calling the WV Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-352-6513. Specifically, the code states: “Any person required to report under this article who is a member of the staff or volunteer of a public or private institution, school, entity that provides organized activities for children, facility, or agency shall also immediately notify the person in charge of the institution, school, entity that provides organized activities for children, facility, or agency, or a designated agent thereof, who may supplement the report or cause an additional report to be made: Provided, That notifying a person in charge, supervisor, or superior does not exempt a person from his or her mandate to report suspected abuse or neglect.” Learn more at shieldwv.com/faqs. #SHIELDWV #mandatoryreporting #FAQFriday

In California, certain individuals are mandated by law to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect. Of the over 40 categories of mandated reporters listed on California's Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), teachers are first on the list. To prepare for this difficult responsibility, teachers and school personnel are required to take CA AB 1432 mandated reporter training annually.

Protecting children is a responsibility I believe we all share, and the abuse Sara Sharif endured is truly sickening. Saras abuse underscores the urgent need for meaningful changes to our social care system and laws around protecting children. A register for elective home education could ensure every child is accounted for and regularly seen. I belive schools should have greater powers to call multi-agency strategy meetings, enabling faster responses to safeguarding concerns. A UK-wide ban on physical chastisement would remove the grey area around acceptable levels of harm and protect children from all forms of violence. These are changes I would like to see as part of reforms to the social care system and law, ensuring no child is left unseen or unprotected. #Safeguarding #ChildProtection #SocialCareReform #Education

Our Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline is down. The safety of children is important to us. If this is a life-threatening emergency, contact local law enforcement. Mandatory reporters should enter reports of abuse and/or neglect through the portal at dcfs.la/mandatedreporters. We are also experiencing technical difficulties with our LAHelpU phone line. For SNAP and Child Support matters, you can send your caseworker an email through the CAFÉ Self Service Portal. You can also email LAHelpU.DCFS@la.gov. LAHELP-U staff can look up your case and contact your caseworker if needed. In your email, please provide your name as it appears in our records, your contact information and case ID (the shorter number on the front of your EBT card), and a brief description of your situation. Please use a descriptive SUBJECT line (i.e. redetermination, interview, etc.) and include your case ID. Please allow at least 3 business days for a response. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
