We recognise that there are too many people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity at this time and we hold the vision that things change for you soon. A reminder that the Shelter WA office will be closed from 24 Dec 2024 to 2 Jan 2025. With many staff taking extended annual leave over the holiday period our staffing levels will be reduced from 20 Dec to 13 Jan. We look forward to working with you, sharing key updates and information about homelessness and community housing in WA and more in 2025. #ShelterWA #Christmas2024 #ChristmasinWA #FestiveSeason2024

Did you know that last year the whole of Belfast was either threatened with homelessness or already homeless? Seriously, the whole of Belfast… OK, not actually Belfast – but 324,990 households in the UK, which is about the same size as Belfast. That’s half a Glasgow, most of a Cardiff, most of a Croydon, 70% of a Leicester, nearly 2 Readings, 2 Cheltenhams, or 141 Chalfont-St-Giles’s… A whole Belfast is owed a duty – meaning their local authority must help, prevent, or relieve homelessness. That could mean finding Temporary Accommodation… but there’s already a full Rotherham in Temporary Accommodation! From March 2023 to March 2024, these figures have increased by 92% year on year. We work with our member London boroughs to find secure, safe, affordable, and good quality homes for households in Temporary Accommodation. But we need a cross-departmental national strategy for Temporary Accommodation and Homelessness, because if we see another 92% increase… We’re going for a full Manchester… #HomelessnessCrisis #UKHousing #TemporaryAccommodation #SocialImpact #AffordableHousing #HomelessnessAwareness #HousingCrisis #SupportLocal #CommunityCare #LinkedInCommunity

Melbourne, zero homelessness is possible. As a community health provider, we see the negative effects poor housing has on people's health and wellbeing every day. The 2021 Census revealed that there are 1,029 homeless people in Darebin. However, due to the changeable nature of homelessness, this figure is estimated to be closer to 1,500 on any given night. We stand with an alliance of Melbourne-based businesses, brands, organisations and community groups publicly calling for change and taking practical actions to make Melbourne a liveable city for all. A city that does not accept or walk past the harmful effects of homelessness. Join us in supporting the movement by visiting melbournezero.org.au, add your voice to the call for change and find out what else you can do. Together, we can end homelessness. #EndHomelessness #MelbourneZero

Supportive housing providers across the province are working together to lobby for more low-barrier options for people experiencing homelessness. The newly formed BC Coalition for Safe and Sustainable Supportive Housing is made up of sector leaders who together oversee more than 10,000 living spaces for people who in most cases were previously homeless. "These are people who can literally come right off the street or right into shelter and step into housing where they get access to meals, where they are connected with nursing on site, where they end up having life skill supportive services," said Bob Hughes, CEO of ASK Wellness. “What we’ve seen is that a solution to homelessness is supportive housing, and done in an effective way that’s resourced properly. . . it works.” They have already begun discussions with BC’s Ministry of Housing for more low-barrier housing to get more people off the streets. PHS Community Services Society CEO Micheal Vonn chairs the coalition. Read on: https://bit.ly/3XH2wzx #homelessness #housing #harmreduction

A landmark study released today by Homelessness Australia has found the number of people at risk of homelessness in NSW has surged 64% to almost 700,000, partly driven by the huge increase in the number of people experiencing rental stress. The housing situation in Australia is fast becoming a catastrophe, with 700,000 people just one rent rise or one emergency away from becoming homeless. This enormous increase has completely overwhelmed the capacity of our already-stretched homelessness services, who have had to close their doors to people desperately seeking help. As always, we’re continuing our call for the NSW and Federal governments to step up and provide at least an extra 20% of funding to fix this total economic and social failure. World Homeless Day 2024 was observed on October 10th. Three months earlier, Prince William launched the 'Homewards' initiative in Lambeth, highlighting that ending homelessness is achievable. His upcoming documentary, set to air next week, will explore his vision for eradicating homelessness and offer deeper insights into his strategy. Could the UK draw inspiration from Finland, a country with a population one-twelfth the size of the UK and ranked 43rd in GDP, which aims to eliminate homelessness by 2027? As the designer of Centrepoint's first rough sleepers' hostel in Lambeth—opened by its patron, the late HRH Princess of Wales, on October 2nd, 1991—I have seen homelessness increase year after year. Today, 142,490 children live in temporary accommodation, and even families and wheelchair users are increasingly impacted by this crisis. A new housing model is urgently required—one that accommodates mixed homeless communities, including singles, shared units for siblings or friends, and families, including wheelchair users—to help reduce local authorities' spending, which reached £1.74 billion in 2023. Of this, nearly £492 million was spent on B&Bs, reflecting a 9% increase total over the previous year. Our MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) concept, known as "FlexiTA", is designed for these mixed communities, recognising that homelessness now affects all sectors of society. With a new government in place and the upcoming budget announcement, it will be interesting to see if there is any alignment between Prince William's homelessness vision and the government's plans to support those most in need. I eagerly await both developments. #WorldHomelessDay2024 #Centrepoint #Shelter #homelessness #homeless #government #housing #localauthorities #b&b #roughsleepers #NewHousingTopologies #mmc

Building new homes is paramount to confronting the current housing crisis, but it takes time. Time that people facing homelessness don’t have. So we’re investigating the use of our sites slated for development to provide temporary accommodation for those that need it most, particularly during the harsh winter months. Partnering with community housing providers and support services to use these properties as temporary accommodation means we can make the most of our housing portfolio and provide immediate housing for the most vulnerable in the community. New data released last week by the government and reported by Shelter shows a record number of children - 151,000 - living in temporary accommodation - up 15% in only 12 months and the highest since records began in 2004. The number of homeless families living in emergency accommodation such as B&Bs and hostels has reached 8,860 – a rise of 29% in a year. Overall there are now a record 117,450 homeless households living in temporary accommodation in England – the highest figure ever and up 12% in a year. New truly affordable housing continues to be desperately needed and the new government must use planning in the best way possible to deliver it.
