Collaboration in Action: Cool Neighbourhoods Meets Cool Cities 🌱 Last week, the Cool Neighbourhoods project was proud to participate in the Interreg North Sea Programme Cool Cities partner meeting and conference in Gothenburg. This inspiring event brought together stakeholders committed to reducing urban heat stress and enhancing climate resilience. Representing Cool Neighbourhoods, Tiny Maenhout (Municipality of Middelburg) presented the Cool Towns Intervention Catalogue, showcasing innovative solutions to urban heat challenges. Meanwhile, Sabine COUROUBLE (CAPSO) shared a powerful testimonial on how Saint-Omer, a smaller city, is successfully integrating measures to combat heat stress. The Cool Cities project, where Middelburg and CAPSO are also partners, focuses on creating networks of "cool routes" and "cool spaces" to address heat stress, particularly for vulnerable groups, in cities across the Interreg North Sea Programme Sea Region. 💡 Highlights from the three-day event ➡ Day 1: Explored innovative mapping techniques to identify vulnerabilities and prioritise actions, alongside insightful presentations on urban heat stress management strategies. ➡ Day 2: A dynamic conference brought together stakeholders from local governments, private sectors, Gothenburg’s regional climate adaptation network, and representatives from Malmö. The day included a visit to Maskinparken, an exemplary climate-adaptive urban design project with smart water management systems that address flooding risks. ➡ Day 3: Hosted at Gothenburg City Hall, discussions focused on the final outcomes of the Cool Cities initiative, with a collaborative exchange of ideas driving shared goals forward. Special thanks go to all our partners, especially Göteborgs Stad, for organising such an inspiring event. Together, Cool Neighbourhoods and Cool Cities are paving the way towards cooler, more resilient cities, through dynamic collaborations. Throughout the Active Cities project, cities across the North Sea Region will carry out various pilot activities with the shared aim of shifting their urban zones from car-centric to human-focused areas. Active mobility encourages people to reduce their reliance on cars, adopting walking and cycling as a regular transport option. The Active Cities pilots are exploring different ways to boost active mobility in the region, and only with the help of locals can the activities truly put people back at the heart of urban planning. The key to running impactful and efficient pilots is ensuring citizens are actively involved in the process. We caught up with 3 of our Active Cities to check how the pilots are going so far and discuss the importance of involving citizens throughout the pilot activites. In the article we hear how: 🚸 Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg is addressing urban spatial challenges and promoting sustainable mobility in and around its schools. 🚲 City of Aarhus is implementing a new mobility hub concept to encourage commuters to choose active transport modes over cars. 🛣 Bergen kommune is involving local residents to boost numbers using the Fyllingsdalen Tunnel, a dedicated cycle and pedestrian tunnel servicing the city. Thanks to our cities for the invaluable insights! Stay tuned as we continue to document the development of the pilots and hear the other ways our Active Cities are involving local citizens. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dPAaKXtF

Voi has just hit an incredible milestone in Stockholm, the city where our journey began in 2018 🛴💚 On June 23, 2024, we celebrated our 🎉 20 millionth ride 🎉 in this vibrant city. The ride was taken by one of our loyal users who has been with us for 2.5 years, marking their 277th ride. Did you know? Stockholm is not just our hometown; it's a global leader in sustainable urban mobility! Here are some fun facts: 🌍 Stockholm’s ambitious climate targets: The city aims to be fossil fuel-free by 2040, striving for a greener, cleaner future for all its residents. And while car-use slightly decreased in 2023, there is a lot more to be done to reach this target together. 🚲 Bike-friendly city: Stockholm boasts over 760 kilometers of bike lanes, making it one of the most bike- and e-scooter friendly cities in the world. This network allows thousands of cyclists and e-scooter riders to navigate the city safely and efficiently every day. 🚗 Car-free city center: Stockholm has announced a groundbreaking plan to transform part of its city center into a car-free zone. Starting from December 31 a 20-block area will only permit zero-emission vehicles while banning petrol and diesel cars entirely. This initiative aims to drastically reduce air pollution and noise, creating a healthier environment for residents and visitors alike. We share Stockholms stad's vision of greener, more livable cities. Here’s to many more millions of rides 🛴💚
