This week's parsha is called Vishwa, meaning scent, referring to our patriarch Jacob, who returns to the Holy Land after a 20 year stay in Haran. Jacob sends Angel emissaries to Asov, his brother, in the hope of a reconciliation, but his messengers report that his brother is on the warpath with 400 armed men. Nothing in the Torah is random and each word and phrase hold lessons for us. We read that Jacob prepares in a certain order. First he prepares for war and only afterwards does he pray. And then Jacob sends itself a large gift consisting of a massive quantity of valuable livestock to appease him. One may ask, Jacob was such a holy man, why didn't he pray first? Why did he pray only after he prepared for a run in with his brother? God does not want us to hide from the world and pray upon a mountain top. Far from everything. We are physical people and the mitzvahs we are commanded in the Torah are done. With physical things to elevate the physical world, this is also a lesson for our daily lives. In the same order of Jacob's actions, number one, we must think ahead, prioritize and plan, especially in delicate situations, using our time and resources in the best way possible so we can be the most effective in all we endeavor to do #2 we must always have faith and #3 we must always have hope. On this week's Hope Talks episode I mentioned a session at our Hope Together Conference a couple of months ago, so I thought to share it here to give a bit more context. A couple of things to keep in mind: 1) I never promised to be an expert in slide advancement. 2) Regarding Singleness: - I've never said don't try. I've never said don't make yourself available or put yourself in ponds to fish and be fished. - I do say don't force. I do say don't let the desire become the mission. I do say trust the Lord and let him write your story. As I wrote the story as he revealed it in real time through my blog for so many years and in my book, the whole point is God has a plan and purpose. I am grateful and joyful for his faithfulness to me. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
