# 27 Vanilla Vectors - a series about vector algebra & calculus There are many different disturbances acting on a spacecraft. These are forces, other than gravity, that disturb the orbit from being Keplerian. They include sunlight, the atmosphere, the magnetosphere, and even gravity itself can be a disturbance if it’s not uniform (it isn’t) or if there are other planets involved (there are). The cool thing is that a disturbance doesn’t just change the trajectory of the spacecraft, it can change its orientation too. That’s because disturbances interact differently with different parts of the spacecraft, so the centroid, that is, the place where the resultant force of the disturbance acts, is often different from the center of mass. When this happens, a disturbance torque is created. Now, this isn’t necessarily bad, you can use such torques creatively to benefit the mission. It’s just one more headache spacecraft engineers need to deal with, but at least it’s a cool one! #space #physics #aerospace #scienceandtechnology

New Paper out! En route to bringing time-domain spectroscopy into space: researchers from the DLR Institut für Optische Sensorsysteme with Partners from Technische Universität Berlin , Freie Universität Berlin , Technische Universität Dresden, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the start up company TeraSpinTec GmbH. The team joined forces in the project ITISA within the frame of the DFG priority program INTEREST-THz, and verified that a new type of very broadband THz emitters fulfill the radiation hardness requirments for operation on the martian moon Phobos. In the article „Radiation hardness of ultrabroadband spintronic Terahertz emitters: en-route to a space-qualified terahertz time-domain gas spectrometer“ it is shown, that measurements of the vibrational fingerprint of matter between 10 and 1000 cm-1 (0.1 to ~30 THz) can be performed with a competitive resolution of better than 4 cm-1 (~ 100 GHz).
