When you witness the outer excellence of a leader you admire, you'll see that it's the result of decades of inner work. Successful leaders continuously develop themselves to guide others. Another productive Women In Bio-San Diego Mentors, Advisors, Peers & Sponsorship (MAPS) session is in the books! Our Directors Peer Group didn't hold back in sharing tried and tested foundational truths about what it takes to be a confident and self-assured leader. Liz Paz reminded us on the importance of 'doing the work' to consolidating your true value props and your USP, much like you would with a novel product. Padma Durvasula shared the 'kitchen-sink' approach to preparing one-self for a pitch. Pen down your experience, so you fully understand the depth and breath of your experience. Underscore that with examples, then edit again. Experts in their own niches, Molly, (Jenen) Tan, Jessica and Kristina M. shared how they step up to bring the excellence out in teams, with 'collaboration' being a core team value across Marketing, Commercialization & Technical domains in #lifescience. Sheena and I endorsed trust-building with teams as a non-negotiable value that has always paid off. It remains an important skill to bring to any negotiation or position of leadership. And finally, understanding that being respected means holding deep admiration for someone because of their abilities, qualities or achievements. It is more important than being likable. Appreciating and separating the two is a good balance leaders strive for. We can't wait for our next session on Tuesday, July 2 before the summer break! Over the past few weeks, I've interviewed several remarkable women for a capstone project in a leadership and coaching specialization. These conversations have been incredibly enlightening and fun! I spoke to women who navigated challenges from breaking into male-dominated industries to balancing family responsibilities with career aspirations. They embraced dramatic career shifts, relocated across continents, and often created their own opportunities when traditional paths weren't available. Their stories highlighted the power of continuous learning, the willingness to take risks, and the fact that (although we can) we don’t have to do it alone. Their advice to women aspiring to leadership positions was equally inspiring. Here are just a few insights: Crystal Jones, PCED, MoCED stressed the importance of finding a career that aligns with one's values and brings a sense of fulfillment. She also encourages women to build a strong network of relationships, as these connections can open doors and provide support throughout their career journey. Bobbie Carlton emphasized the importance of building a solid personal brand and network. She stresses that visibility is crucial for success, especially when starting a business or transitioning to entrepreneurship. Monica Million, ENP shared the importance of maintaining integrity, building a strong network, and continuously learning and adapting. She encourages women to seek out mentors, ask questions, and be unafraid to take risks in pursuing their goals. Halcyon Frank, ENP, APTD, delivered a clear and powerful message: "Don't wait for permission." She encourages women to take the initiative, build their networks, and actively pursue their goals despite obstacles or a lack of immediate support. Emily Valiant emphasized the importance of persistence, flexibility, and self-belief. She encourages women to "paddle their own canoe" - to focus on their journey rather than comparing themselves to others. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the women who generously shared their time and wisdom for this project. Though each journey is unique, collectively, these narratives provide depth and color to our understanding of leadership. They offer new perspectives, inspiring me and countless others on their leadership journeys. What about you? What advice do you have for aspiring leaders?

Yesterday, I sharpened my strategic edge at a phenomenal workshop for women leaders; led by heavyweights from Harvard and Wharton! These Ivy League instructors and accomplished entrepreneurs weren't just throwing frameworks at us; they were igniting a fire within each attendee! It was a great reminder of the importance of strategic thinking, which (fun fact!) was also identified as one of my top strengths on the CliftonStrengths assessment earlier this year. This workshop definitely nudged me to refresh my memory and learn some practical applications I can put to use right away. The cherry on top? A copy of the insightful Harvard Business Review Guide to Thinking Strategically. It's already bumped to the top of my reading list, packed with tools to help us "See the big picture. Focus on what matters. Make smarter decisions." every single day. Key takeaway: Strategic thinking isn't about reacting, it's about anticipating challenges and crafting winning roadmaps. Credibility on Legs: -The gentleman below is Tinashe Mutarisi - a serial entrepreneur & established philanthropist. -He owns no less than 5 businesses all housed under Nash Holdings & employs thousands of people. - I called him once (2023) & requested for his permission for me to use his name and business in my book:The Credibility Manifesto Handbook. His response: “it will be an honor to be featured in a book that speaks to credibility of business leaders & companies they lead”. Fast forward to 2024: -In the last 4 weeks, I put out these 2 questions to over 120 MBA students (UZ & WUA) & 3 companies:- 1) List the top 10 business leaders (Zimbabwe) that you would like your youngest child to spend a day with 2) What values do these leaders share that make you comfortable for your child to spend a day in their company? On the 1st question, the gentleman featured prominently. On the second question; humility,hardwork,honesty, empathy— featured eloquently in describing him & others on that list. These are the Credibility Building Blocks- key values underlying the Credibility Flywheel framework. Lesson learned: -Beyond your product or service, clients look for something deeper. -Beyond your success, people look for role models for their children— not every “successful” person is a role model. -Role models have a higher credibility rating- this makes them highly influential & powerful.
