It is ambitious, it is achievable, but the technocratic and behaviouralist narratives the CCC are using here are disastrous. The challenge is cultural and needs to be framed that way. Without a cultural shift - away from individualism - the UK will achieve very little. It will in fact slip further into the narcissistic mire it already finds itself in. The CCC (and numerous others in the climate and nature movement) need to recommend investment in programmes and initiatives that strengthen togetherness by activating and reinforcing compassionate values at every level of society. Anyone who thinks (or pretends) that mitigation and adaptation at the scale being talked about here is achievable while hyper-individualism remains in place is kidding themselves, or kidding you.

An ambitious and deliverable recommendation backed by robust analysis. By taking this on board the government has the opportunity to set out an NDC that meets the scale of the challenge presented by the climate crisis, and is investable for the private sector/drives growth as we transition to net zero.

Are you an expert in greenhouse gas emissions and percentage reductions? No, nor me. What we all need to hear from this is that this target is 'ambitious but achievable' And the key to getting it done is all of us. We are up for it. Progress is already underway. We have new, ambitious climate leadership in the UK. We need to focus all our efforts in bringing everyone with us as we deliver ambitious climate action.

We recommend the UK’s NDC commits to reduce territorial greenhouse gas emissions by 81% from 1990 to 2035. It is informed by the latest science, technological developments, and the UK’s national circumstances. This sets the right level of ambition for the UK. Meeting both this and the 2030 NDC requires rapid but achievable action with low-carbon technologies becoming mainstream. We need investment and action on electric vehicles, heat pumps, and renewables need to come now. An ambitious NDC must also be accompanied by action on adaptation to climate change, climate finance and delivery on international initiatives. Action to deliver the UK NDC can help to speed up global efforts to decarbonise. Through proving delivery and bringing down costs, many of the UK actions such as achieving a low-carbon power system, rolling out electric vehicles and deploying carbon capture and storage will make an important and timely wider contribution to global decarbonisation. https://lnkd.in/eHQ5KSt9

“UK set to miss near, long term emissions targets, DNV predicts” Britain is set to miss its decarbonisation targets for 2030 and its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by the middle of the century, according to DNV. Under the Paris Agreement, Britain has committed to reduce emissions by 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, but a DNV report forecast the reduction to be 55% by then. "Without immediate action the UK will fail to deliver on its climate commitments, fall behind in the global race to decarbonize," said Hari Vamadevan, executive vice president and regional director, UK & Ireland, energy systems at DNV. In addition to the Paris global climate pact, Britain has its own legally binding target of bringing all emissions to net zero by 2050 from 1990 levels. However, the country's annual emissions are expected to be 125 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2050, equivalent to an 85% cut from 1990 levels, not the 100% reduction the government is aiming for, according to DNV. DNV expects transport and buildings are two sectors which will be the largest contributors to total annual emissions in 2050. The result from our recent poll was spot on – the energy sector contributes the most to carbon emissions globally. Yet only 40% of climate action plans submitted by governments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) prioritize adaptation in the energy sector. Investment in clean energy and resilient energy infrastructures are important in tackling net zero goals and meeting rising energy demands. As WMO Secretary-General Prof Petteri Taalas said, “time is not on our side, and our climate is changing before our eyes.” Now is the time to act.
