Earlier this year, Landis+Gyr's ‘exchange2024' brought together industry leaders to share ideas, collaborate, and explore innovative solutions for #grid optimization and energy transformation. Our CEO, Mike Phillips, joined Arch Rao, CEO of Span; Amitha Kota, Group Chief Technology Officer at Landis+Gyr; and Rozane Bezuidenhout, Director of Future Energy Systems at TCS, for an engaging panel discussion: “Streamline Your Grid Orchestration Through a Connected Ecosystem of Grid Edge Assets.” Missed it? Increased capacity demands are on the rise, and utilities must look toward microgrid solutions to stay ahead. Tune in on Wednesday, October 30, at 2 p.m., Eastern, for an interactive panel discussion that tackles the pressing issue of capacity growth and how microgrid deployment—whether behind or in front of the meter—can offer effective, timely solutions. Among the expert speakers is Milton Geiger, NRTC’s Vice President of Smart Grid Solutions, who will share his insights on harnessing the power of smart grids and distributed energy resources (DERs) to meet today’s utility needs. #ICYMI: "Digital twins” are a 🗝️ solution to increasing grid capabilities and security. Last week, the Office of Electricity announced the selection of Southern Company for $2.4 million in funding to experiment with new approaches & technologies on the operating grid without risking disruptions to critical energy services. Projects like this provide a means of conducting this experimentation without putting the current in-service electric grid at risk. The continued rapid expansion of data centers has significantly increased the demand for electricity, putting increased pressure on the energy industry, requiring innovative and uniquely tailored solutions to address these needs. It was great talking to Darren Sweeney for S&P Global about this, and how the ComEd service territory continues to be among the top five regions in terms of data center growth in the United States. At Exelon we expect 11 GW of data center load growth in our service territories, up from the 6 GW we were projecting at the beginning of the year. This has been an exciting challenge to approach the large inflows of energy demand, but we’re confident that we can do it affordably and sustainably. Did you know that time synchronization is of growing importance to grid operations? Utilities need to start deploying applications to process precise grid measurements to detect events such as frequency disturbance, oscillation detection and harmonics, as the surge in power demand comes from energy hungry data centers, factories and renewables increases. Join our Hansen Chan and Rob Wright in this LIVE webinar to see how utilities are adapting. I'm joined on this episode of Hidden Forces by electricity and data center industry veteran Brian Janous to discuss the electricity demand growth anticipated by the rapid buildout of AI data centers, the onshoring of new industrial capacity, and the introduction of more intermittent sources of energy like wind and solar onto the grid. The first hour begins with a conversation about electric power and what we mean when we talk about “The Grid.” What are the important pieces that comprise the grid, how do they come together to support the functioning of a modern economy, and what are the challenges inherent in trying to update and expand such a complex and interconnected system? In the second hour, we discuss the planning and procurement process for new data centers and some of the opportunities that may exist to invest around this anticipated boom. We also discuss how a precipitous rise in electricity demand without a concurrent increase in new capacity could lead to substantial cost increases for households and a series of hard choices for policymakers and politicians facing angry constituents in the years to come. https://lnkd.in/gtdP9a8Y
