The cheapest way to park the car is to avoid using a car and picking up public transport or a bicycle. Otherwise, the parking process can be challenging, and prices hurt. In the Netherlands, it is generally tradition not to park a vehicle at the destination point during home-work commutes. I see many people who live outside Amsterdam and work within the city divide their trip during their home-work journey into two parts. The first part covers approximately 50-80% of the distance covered by car, and the second part is covered by public transport. Free parking places are usually chosen in the middle of this commute pattern. If many people choose this method, it seems more or less efficient. However, how much are you ready to pay for free parking? The debate question is not only about the price of public transport, which you must also pay for the final part of the home-work journey and for returning to your vehicle at the end of the day. But also about the time that can be saved or spent during these sequences: driving, parking, public transport, and return. Everybody decides on their own. In some cases, a suitable solution can be unexpected. The Great Hot Air Balloon Commute In the bustling city of Metropolis, known for its skyscrapers and relentless traffic jams, a new business idea was taking flight—literally. Meet Fred, an enthusiastic entrepreneur with a penchant for unconventional ideas. One morning, while stuck in traffic for the third time that week, Fred had an epiphany: what if people could commute to work in hot air balloons? Fred envisioned a fleet of brightly colored balloons carrying stressed-out workers peacefully above the gridlock, offering a serene start to the day. With boundless excitement, he named his new venture “SkyCommute” and set to work. Fred invested his savings into a collection of hot air balloons and hired a team of pilots. The launch day was spectacular. Balloons of all shapes and colors filled the sky, and curious onlookers gathered to witness this novel commuting solution. The first few rides were smooth, with passengers marveling at the stunning aerial views of the city. However, it didn’t take long for the impracticalities to become glaringly obvious. For starters, navigating a hot air balloon in a city full of towering buildings and unpredictable wind patterns was no small feat. Several balloons drifted off course, leaving passengers stranded on rooftops or in entirely different neighborhoods. One unlucky commuter even ended up in the middle of a zoo, causing quite a stir among the animals. Then there was the issue of timing. What should have been a 20-minute ride often turned into an hour-long adventure as pilots struggled to find safe landing spots. Passengers frequently arrived at work late, disheveled, and more stressed than if they had braved the traffic. Despite these challenges, Fred remained optimistic. He decided to add onboard amenities to improve the experience. Soon, each balloon was equipped with Wi-Fi, coffee bars, and even miniature meeting spaces. However, the weight of these additions caused balloons to descend unexpectedly, leading to more rooftop rescues and awkward landings in public parks. The final straw came when a balloon accidentally landed in the mayor’s private garden during a press conference. The incident was broadcasted live, and while it brought SkyCommute plenty of attention, it wasn’t the kind Fred had hoped for. Facing mounting complaints and safety concerns, Fred had to admit defeat. He grounded SkyCommute and returned to the drawing board, determined to find a less lofty business idea. Despite its failure, the tale of SkyCommute became a local legend, reminding everyone that while thinking outside the box is great, practicality should never be left on the ground.
