A Brief History of Creativity, Ninth Installment, asking the question: Does quantity beats quality? His name is Matt Farley. He is a musician who lives in Danvers, MA. He has written at least 24,000 songs, written under about 80 pseudonyms, which he posts to music streaming platforms, and can write dozens of songs a day. He zeroes in on themes. As Papa Razzi and the Photogs, he sings about celebrities, including an 83-song album about movie directors. He sings about geographical places under the name The Guy Who Sings About Cities & Towns. He sings about food under the name Hungry Food Band. He has hundreds of songs which are marriage proposals, and even more which invited various named girls to the prom. He sings about sports teams, animals, jobs, the weather, furniture, people’s names… Some of his ‘best known’ songs are about going to the bathroom, performed as either the Toilet Bowl Cleaners or the Odd Man Who Sings About Poop, Puke and Pee. Perhaps you’ve heard “Poop In My Fingernails”, or “I Need A Lot Of Toilet Paper To Clean The Poop In My Butt.” And if that weren’t enough, he hosts two podcasts and makes micro-budget movies. Is this creativity? I think that each individual effort falls short of what most of us would call creativity. But on the other hand, I also think that his effort, in its sheer, headlong boldness, could be considered creativity. Oh - and he makes about $200,000 a year doing all of this. #creativity #abriefhistoryofcreativity #music #streaming https://lnkd.in/ed8QfQbD

When it comes to scholarship and creative practice in the academy, I am working very hard to redefine what Hip Hop scholarship looks like. As a Hip Hop scholar, I am also a practitioner who creates Hip Hop music and who works to push the culture forward. Creative practice and scholarship at a level that lands you a spot on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, I think I’m making a pretty strong case! https://lnkd.in/gsZzYch9

New Post: Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Breaks Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot Rap Songs Chart - https://lnkd.in/g5pnQ-qx - As if the beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar wasn’t already historic, the saga’s most enduring track, Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” enters the record books with an unprecedented 21st week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart. The single, released on pgLang/Interscope/ICLG, surpasses Lil Nas X’s 2019 juggernaut, “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, for the most weeks atop the chart since its launch in 1989. Related Why Kendrick Lamar's Savage 'Not Like Us' Could Pop Out At the Grammys 10/03/2024 “Not Like Us,” released May 4 amid the height of the rappers’ feud, reaches the record through continued strong performance in the three metrics that inform the chart: streaming, sales and radio airplay. It wins a 20th frame at No. 1 on the Rap Streaming Songs chart thanks to 17.1 million official U.S. streams in the latest tracking week (Sept. 27 – Oct. 3), according to Luminate. With its newest week on top, it matches “Old Town Road” for the third-longest command among all titles. Desiigner’s “Panda” and Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” share first place, at 23 weeks each. For sales, “Not Like Us” registered 2,000 downloads in the tracking week. Despite a 10% decline from the prior week, it pushes 4-3 on Rap Digital Song Sales, a list it previously ruled for nine nonconsecutive weeks. Lamar’s smash also repeats at No. 7 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart, with 45.4 million in total audience impressions, a 3% slide. (All radio airplay, regardless of genre, contributes to a song’s rank on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.) The single dominated its core format this summer, with 15 nonconsecutive weeks in charge of the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list. As “Not Like Us” resets the leaderboard on Hot Rap Songs, here’s a review of the songs with the most weeks at No. 1 in the chart’s 35-year history: Weeks at No. 1, Song Title, Artist, Date Reached No. 121, “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar, May 18, 202420, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, April 13, 201919, “Industry Baby,” Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow, Aug. 7, 202118, “Hot Boyz,” Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott featuring Nas, Eve & Q-Tip, Nov. 27, 199918, “Fancy,” Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX, May 3, 201418, “Hotline Bling,” Drake, Oct. 10, 201517, “Panda,” Desiigner, April 23, 201617, “Mood,” 24kGoldn featuring iann dior, Oct. 24, 2020 The colossal single extends Lamar’s recent near-monopoly on Hot Rap Songs, with the rapper

Can You Really Make a Living as a Busker/Street Musician? Busking is the art of performing music, magic, dance or other acts in public spaces with the aim of collecting voluntary donations. Unlike formal concerts or club shows, busking takes place directly on the streets, allowing artists to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level. The Origins of Busking The term busking traces back to the Spanish word 𝒃𝒖𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒓, meaning "to seek" or "to look for." Historically, entertainers would take to the streets in search of donations & busking became the accepted English term for this practice. Public performance has deep cultural roots, from ancient Rome. This rich history highlights busking’s role as one of the earliest entrepreneurial paths for artists, blending talent & direct #customer engagement. Busking vs. Street Musician A street musician specifically performs music, often specializing in instruments or vocals. Buskers, on the other hand, encompass a broader range of acts, including theater, puppetry, etc. Can You Make a Living from Busking? With the digital era, busking has evolved. Not only do buskers earn tips from passersby but platforms like YouTube have opened doors to global audiences. Successful buskers can supplement their street earnings with online ad revenue, sponsorships & even music #sales. For talented performers with strong engagement skills, #busking can be more than a side hustle, it can be a career. It teaches fundamental #entrepreneurship skills, from attracting an audience to building rapport & even mastering the art of “closing the sale” in the form of tips. Dovydas: From Street to Screen One of today’s most well-known modern buskers is Dovydas, a multi-talented musician originally from Lithuania who now performs in USA. Known for his improvisational skills, live looping & multi-instrumental talents, Dovydas creates engaging performances by layering guitar, bass & percussion sounds, often as a one-man band. His engaging personality & incredible technical skill have made him a #YouTube sensation, gaining a fanbase far beyond the street. His unique style, which merges rock, blues, jazz & more, has led to estimates of his net worth around $1 million, though this varies with his online reach & performance activities. Buskers are experts at audience #engagement, resilience & creativity under pressure. They embody entrepreneurial spirit, understanding that every passerby is a potential “client.” Whether busking is a stepping stone or a main stage, it showcases how talent, grit & audience connection can translate into a successful #career. Below are performances by three different buskers playing 'Dance Monkey.' Why “niche-out” in holiday music? 1. It’s way more fun to write (you can get away with songs like “Dogs in Christmas Sweaters” and “The Cat Knocked Over the Christmas Tree.”) 😂 2. It’s evergreen 🎄 (pun intended). Christmas and New Year’s come back around every year. 3. There’s a lot of potential for magic moments. 🪄 More than 100 holiday movies were released in 2023. 42 of those were from Hallmark. When the right song is placed behind the right visual, that can make a lasting impression - or a magic moment in that film. Writing holiday songs that feel like the classic standards can impact a movie or TV commercial in a way that’s nostalgic and familiar to viewers. And aren’t we a little exhausted of the same songs being played over and over? Some new tunes that feel like the old ones create new memories and meaning to the holidays. #sync #synclicensing #Christmas #holidays

"What am I doing here?' I heard these words from the documentary 'The Greatest Night in Pop' on Netflix. Lionel Ritchie had just hosted the American Music Awards. He won six awards. He was nominated for nine awards. He wrote the song 'We are the world' with Michael Jackson and gathered the top stars of the time to record the song. As he sat in the studio with everyone, he said to himself "What am I doing here?" It reminded me that we are in the places we are and do the things we have done because we took action and DID them. And we are here because we are meant to be here. Even if we feel as if we are not sure how we got here. The truth is, we did get here. My book is due out at the end of the year, and I have about 12 days before my pre-sale campaign ends. Most people do a ten-day countdown. I am doing twelve. Throughout this process I have asked myself “What am I doing here?” The answer is, sharing what I know and what I believe. That you everyone for the support that I have already received. I can’t wait to get some chapters out to my superfans and get feedback as to what works and what I can do to improve. Here’s the link to the pre-sales. If you can share it, spread the word, I would appreciate it. https://lnkd.in/gHNcQj6T
