What is one thing you can do to A.) Build momentum for yourself B.) Improve your annual review C.) See if things worked out like you thought they would Are you ready for this? It’s super complicated, turn on your listening ears (or your reading eyes)… Create a notepad document. Yeah notepad.exe, I know you’ve got it. Leafpad for us Linux junkies, iNotepad for my Mac friends. Now, each day on a single line… 1. Write down the date 2. Write a single sentence of something you accomplished that day. (Anyone remember Doogie Howser?) In fact it doesn’t even have to be every day. In my world it’s a couple times a week. 👉2/14/24 I added a line of code to my parsing script to automate the table formatting 👉2/16/24 met with client xyz to debrief. They were very receptive and conversation went great. 👉2/17/24 completed hack the box lab on cross-site scripting 👉2/19/24 updated gold image for our client box That’s it. Simple right? Sometimes the note will seem trivial. Sometimes it’s a big thing. Regardless, track it. It matters! You build momentum for the playoffs by building upon what took place during the regular season. Look back and celebrate your wins, see what worked, what paid dividends, and double down. Improve your annual review by selling yourself with detail. Nobody knows what you did better than you. It’s easy to tell the story of the last year when you have a play-by-play of your contributions. Use it to create a billboard for yourself and demonstrate value. See if things worked out like you thought. Was that script update ultimately helpful? Did that client interaction lead to a re-signing or expanded services? How long did it take for that new software you implemented to have functional impact on delivery? All necessary data for this is in your notepad.exe list, and it’s dated! I’ll add one final thought for the #jobseeker, it’s a great way to gather things to fill your resume with! In fact you’ll have too much resume fodder and you’ll have to condense it down to main ideas. Much much easier than trying to think of things on the fly. #LeadershipSunday

Having difficulty attracting the right candidates to apply? There’s a science to it. The best candidates aren’t looking for a list of dos and don’ts They’re looking for a place to belong. Instead of “We need a team player,” Try “Join us to launch a product that changes lives.”
