Starting today, Roblox has introduced a major update: users under the age of 13 can no longer chat with others outside of experiences. And in early 2025, kids under 13 will need parental permission to chat even within experiences. As a parent of two young boys, one of whom just started playing Roblox with me this month, I know how exciting and creative this platform can be. But I also know how important it is to feel confident that they’re exploring a safe, age-appropriate space. These updates build on recent steps Roblox has taken to protect younger users, like: > Restricting access to “Social Hangouts” and “Free-form User Creation” for users under 13 starting this month. > Requiring all experiences to be rated by December 3 so that younger players only see content suitable for their age. > Setting stricter content standards for thumbnails, titles, and descriptions from 2025 onwards to ensure they meet “All Ages” or “9+” guidelines. As a parent, I’m reassured by these changes. As a developer, I’m inspired to think more carefully about the experiences I’m creating and how they can contribute to a safer platform for all players. Following on from my last post, as Roblox just shared its latest update... introducing even more updates to enhance safety and provide better tools for parents. Key highlights include: 🔗 Linked Parent-Child Accounts: Parents can now link their accounts to their child’s, giving them direct control over screen time, spending limits, and content access. 🙊 Enhanced Communication Restrictions: Users under 13 are no longer able to message outside of experiences, with parental permissions required for in-experience chats by 2025. 🤬 New Content Labeling System: A clearer system categorizes content into labels like "Minimal," "Moderate," and "Restricted," ensuring younger users only see what’s appropriate for their age. 👨👧 Improved Parental Tools: New updates make it easier for parents to manage settings and understand safety features, providing greater transparency and control. These updates continue to build on Roblox’s efforts to make the platform safer, more accessible, and more transparent for families. Key updates include: 🔒 Moderation of Unrated Content: Starting December 3, unrated experiences will be restricted for users under 13. As someone who’s worked for Google and now creates Roblox experiences, I see the huge potential here. As someone who has worked for Google and now develops Roblox experiences, I see this as a powerful move toward the future of gamified education. Here’s 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. In 2017, Google rolled out "Be Internet Awesome" to teach kids about online safety. Now, they’ve leveled up. By entering Roblox, they’re not just talking about safety—they’re making it part of the play. And where better than Roblox, a platform with millions of +70M daily active kids, to make a real impact? The game takes players through four zones: 🏰 Kind Kingdom: Promoting kindness online. 🏞 Mindful Mountain: Teaching kids to share safely. 🌊 Reality River: Spotting scams. 🏗 Tower of Treasure: Building strong digital security habits. As a Roblox development studio, I can tell you this is a big deal. It’s not just a game—it’s how education is evolving. Did you know Roblox started out as a platform to help students learn physics? Originally…David Baszucki built a website that featured puzzles and games…all designed to make physics fun. Except…well…how fun can physics really get? So two years in…he pivoted… And started to build a multiplayer, interactive platform. And the rest is history, right? The 2020 pandemic hit and roblox was an overnight success story! Except an overnight success that actually took 14 years. What so many people only discovered for the first time in 2020…was actually launched in 2006. By the end of year one, roblox managed to attract just 11 thousand users. Early on, the platform struggled. Especially after the financial crisis of 2008. So David Baszucki…desperate and trying to figure out how to save his business…introduced something that would become a massive part of his revenue. Robux… Virtual currency you could buy and use inside of roblox! Slowly…and mainly through word of mouth…users started to find out about roblox… And they started to buy robux… But nothing could prepare the platform for march of 2020…when all of a sudden…millions and millions of kids were stuck at home… And it was at that point when roblox became a virtual meeting place for schoolkids all around the world. Today roblox hosts live concerts, shops from brands like nike and gucci…and even celebrity meet-ups… And the little company david baszucki founded in 2006 is now worth overt 25 million dollars.
