To reform our energy system, we must travel back in time — over 100 years ago in fact — to understand the (unofficial) Utility Regulatory Compact made between utilities and policymakers. For decades, the arrangement has worked well enough to power our prosperity. But as we enter a new era of clean energy, climate change, and challenges to growth, cracks are appearing in many of the assumptions that drove the formation of the Utility Regulatory Compact. https://lnkd.in/gMxXYMfD

“This has been a 25-year experiment. It’s fair now to conclude on the basis of the evidence that [the market has] failed to produce value for large numbers of consumers" - Senator Mike Barrett. 🚨🚨The Democratic nominee for President, Kamala Harris, has chosen a vice presidential candidate, and #cleanenergy advocates like me couldn’t be more pleased. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has a stellar record on clean energy topics, having passed more than 40 bills in 2023 alone to push the clean energy revolution forward. The state is on the road to 100% clean energy production by 2040, and its #communitysolar developments are a model the rest of the Midwestern states could emulate. As I mentioned last week, there is a general feeling that no matter the outcome of the election in November the #solar revolution can’t be stopped (not the least of which is the power of our low LCOE and market forces). Still, it’s nice to see another clean energy champion get a national platform to expound on the benefits it’s brought to his state. I’m looking forward to seeing how Gov. Walz addresses these issues. pv magazine USA has the details. https://lnkd.in/eyiTStQZ #Deliveringacleanenergyfuture #commercialsolar #communitysolar Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Last week's RNA study from the NYISO showed narrowing reliability margins for reasons such as expected increase in electric demand, aging plants, and the state's climate policies. The State must act expeditiously on the findings of this important study as the reliability of the electric grid is paramount and cannot be sacrificed due to nearing mandates. Previously, IPPNY provided numerous proven solutions of future resources to ensure the reliability of the grid throughout New York's #CleanEnergy transition. IPPNY continues to support New York's clean energy future, but it's critical for the State to transition safely, while maintaining the reliability of the electric grid.

A great look on #FundingFriday from Climate Power Let's keep the momentum going! The clean energy boom continues across the U.S. In the almost two years since the clean energy plan was signed into law on August 16, 2022, companies have announced or advanced 646 new clean energy projects, creating 334,565 new jobs and driving $372 billion in new investments across 47 states and Puerto Rico.

🚨 In his insightful RealClearEnergy op-ed, CEA President David Holt exposes the unintended consequences of decisions that restrict access to affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound energy. 🌍 As we squeeze energy supply in the name of climate action, prices soar, and less environmentally friendly options are brought back into service. This jeopardizes consumer access to affordable, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy, particularly from #PermanentPower sources like natural gas. 📈 The Gulf of Mexico (#GOM) serves as one of the least carbon-intensive production regions in the world, and the US is the global leader in emissions reductions. Energy mandates and bad policies that restrict the use of these clean, efficient energy sources undermine these achievements and put consumer well-being at risk. 🌊 Read David’s full op-ed to understand the far-reaching implications of restrictive energy policies ⬇

The new government has appointed Chris Stark to lead the development of the country's clean power strategy. One key question will be how to make this happen – via large-scale infrastructure by the large corporate companies to ‘effect economies of scale’ and ‘create jobs’ and ‘generate growth’ (ie: get the 'macro-economics' right and adhere to 'Treasury’s Green Book' rules) or through the construction of a mosaic of local energy and heat markets ? There’s a chance to be really innovative here and empower citizens and small businesses to engage in this exciting endeavour directly (ie: let the economy emerge out of citizens’ actions) rather than to devolve this project to the big guys to do it all for us, building big and ugly in our backyards and treating us citizens as mere onlookers and consumers. Some of us in the Scottish Borders, and elsewhere, are looking for ways to create local heat and energy markets, and there is interest in this as people are constantly asking for advice on what they can do themselves to help mitigate the risks from climate change. There is a real chance here to (re-)create local community action (dare I mention 'local government'?). But the looming invasion by the usual behemoths and their industrial scale battery and windmill parks creates a lot of fear and uncertainty in this space, so progress is slow. Some bold policy choices early on could make a real, and lasting, change ... Over to you, Chris. Happy to help.

California can achieve bold climate goals without sacrificing affordability. A new op-ed from the Clean Air Task Force and Net-Zero California outlines how public-private partnerships could expand clean energy infrastructure and save ratepayers up to $3 billion annually. With energy costs rising 50% in just three years, solutions that balance climate action and affordability are critical. Recent action like AB 3264 and Gov. Newsom’s executive order are steps in the right direction—let’s keep moving toward a sustainable future! Read the full op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/gUZC529x

We’re sharing insights from our 2023 Impact Report, focusing on one of our core initiatives: Electrifying Buildings and Transportation. Let's dive into some key highlights: In Europe, RAP's expertise helped drive the adoption of groundbreaking regulations mandating smart charging infrastructure for #EVs. This move promises reduced costs for consumers, better access to public charging, and improved #renewableenergy use. https://lnkd.in/ewwScFqv Meanwhile, in Texas, bipartisan legislation informed by RAP's Roadmap for Electric Transportation ensures equitable access to EV charging, with provisions for functional charging stations statewide. Crucial steps toward fulfilling climate commitments. https://lnkd.in/e99A4Nnp Shifting gears, RAP's impact on #heatpump adoption has been noticeable. In Europe, our thought leadership informed policymakers in France, Poland, & the UK, guiding them on crucial issues like performance in cold weather & affordability for vulnerable households. https://lnkd.in/dWHSA9PH Momentum in heat pump uptake owes much to collaborative efforts like the Heat Pump Toolkit, which RAP developed with partners like CLASP and Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN). https://lnkd.in/exgrSrMP In the United States, RAP and CLASP’s efforts underscore the importance of robust state policies in tandem with federal funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. Clean heat policies and emissions standards will complement IRA funding. https://lnkd.in/ea7YU58Q From smart charging to heat pump adoption, RAP's Impact Report showcases the power of informed policymaking in driving sustainable energy transitions. Stay tuned! Next week, we'll explore encouraging distributed energy resources (#DERs). https://lnkd.in/ewwScFqv

Our Director of Strategy and Policy, Leslie Chang, has penned an informative by-line article on the connection between policy and innovation in the renewable energy space, focusing specifically on the United States. As the impacts of climate change worsen, the urgency to act increases. The longer we wait to act the more difficult and expensive it will be to address the problem. We must accelerate the implementation of clean energy solutions to better prepare for the effects of climate change.
