It is always great to see sites where there is a strong hand protection policy in place so that regardless of who attends site they are issued with Traffi gloves. Of course national security must always come first. When you add this to the consolidation of the Henderson Shipbuilding Precinct for Defence only, the commercial sector is going to be significantly impacted in terms of available dry-docking facilities. This creates investment opportunities in the commercial maritime sector but deep pockets required and cost escalation and unionisation risks are higher than ever. It is going to be interesting to watch this play out short, medium and long term.

Of the three carriers involved in these activities, the Liaoning and the Shandong are by now well established with the Chinese fleet, while the Fujian, the country’s first domestically produced carrier, is still preparing for operational service. Ultimately, it’s expected to lead to more Chinese-made flattops as the PLAN continues to expand its naval aviation capabilities. Publicly available data, collated below by journalist Ian Ellis, indicates that, as of last week, the Liaoning and its carrier group were operating in the Philippine Sea, with the Shandong and its carrier group just off Hainan Island. Meanwhile, the Fujian had already left Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai for another round of sea trials, with satellite imagery confirming that the three carriers were all sailing as of September 18. The carrier groups for the first two flattops each include at least four destroyers as well as a combat support vessel or frigate, very likely also accompanied by a hunter-killer submarine. [NEWS] Konecranes has received its fifth portal jib order from the US Navy, part of an agreement initially announced in December 2019. Worth $46.8 million, this latest process crane order was booked in November 2024 and the jib will be delivered to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. The US Navy has the option for 2 additional portal jib cranes over the next 2 years, putting the potential total value of the agreement at around the previously estimated $330 million. Records were broken this week at Seaspan ULC in North Vancouver! The first of two Joint Support Ships for the Royal Canadian Navy, the future HMCS Protecteur, is now in position for launch on the floating dry dock. Weighing over 11,000t and 173m in length, the vessel is the longest warship ever built in Canada and breaks records for the heaviest land transport in the country, requiring 456 lines of SPMT to move. This transport also marks the first time #Mammoet has connected 100 lines of SPMT in a continuous train. Tail shafts are an integral mechanical component onboard a vessel. With the recent installation of the port side tail shaft on the first Joint Support Ship, Seaspan is that much closer to launching the longest naval vessel ever built in Canada 🍁. Weighing in at 31 metric tonnes each (about 31,300 kg), these tail shafts transfer power from the dual MAN 12V32/44CR diesel engines to the propeller blades mounted aft. They are connected to the engines by intermediate shafts, which will be installed in the coming months. Watch the timelapse to see the team pull the tail shaft, supported by two trolleys, carefully into place along a shaft installation railway that was specifically designed for the Royal Canadian Navy | Marine royale canadienne's Joint Support Ships. With this milestone complete, we are another step towards readiness for launch. After the same installation is completed on the starboard side, the team will shift focus towards installation of the propeller blades. We are excited to announce that VEEM Ltd has been awarded $1 million under the Defence Industry Development Grants Program – Sovereign Industry Priorities Stream. This grant is to purchase and install a multi-axis CNC machine and scanner for manufacturing propellers and other critical components for Navy. VEEM Managing Director Mark Miocevich said: “We are very appreciative of receiving the $1 million grant to help us fund a new CNC machine and other equipment. This enables VEEM to increase its capacity and capability for manufacturing propellers and other critical components for Navy, including Frigates, Patrol Boats, autonomous vessels and submarines. The future of Canada's navy is taking shape with the River-class destroyers, a fleet set to redefine our nation's maritime combat power. This ambitious project is a historic investment in the Royal Canadian Navy's capabilities, ensuring the protection of Canada's waters and continued contributions to international naval operations. Based on the British Type-26, Canada has significantly modified the combat systems to future-proof the ship and make it more interoperable with our allies and NORAD.
