Kwanzaa, rooted in African heritage and culture, invites us to honor community, family, and the shared values that connect us all. This week-long celebration encourages us to embrace its seven guiding principles: • Unity (Umoja): Strengthening bonds with loved ones and our communities. • Self-Determination (Kujichagulia): Defining our identity and shaping our own destiny. • Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima): Supporting one another to build a brighter future. • Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa): Encouraging shared prosperity and mutual support. • Purpose (Nia): Committing to meaningful contributions to our community. • Creativity (Kuumba): Expressing ourselves through innovation and beauty. • Faith (Imani): Believing in ourselves, our people, and our future. Kwanzaa serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and unity within our communities. It’s a time for storytelling, reflection, and celebration of culture, tradition, and progress. As the candles of the Kinara are lit, may we all be inspired to honor our roots, celebrate our achievements, and step into the New Year with purpose and pride. HAPPY KWANZAA Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community. These values are called the Nguzo Saba which in Swahili means the Seven Principles. Developed by Dr. Karenga, the Nguzo Saba stand at the heart of the origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the building blocks for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them. Kwanzaa begins on Dec. 26, and ends on Jan. 1. The Foundation of the Holiday is built upon the following seven principles: 1. Umoja (Unity) (00-MOE-Jah) – To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race. 2. Kujichagalia (Self-Determination) -To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. 3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) – To build and maintain our community together and to make our brothers and sisters problems our problem s and to solve them together. 4. Ujammaa (Cooperative Economics) – To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other business and to profit together from them. 5. Nia (Purpose) – To make as our collective vocation the building and developing our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. 6. Kuumba (creativity)- To do always as much as we can in the way that we can , in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial then when we inherited it. 7. Imani ( Faith)- To believe with all our hearts in our parents, our teachers, our leaders, people and the righteousness and victory of our struggle. #Kwanzaa2024

How can we create stronger communities through interfaith and intrafaith understanding? 🤝🏼 🤩 In the third week of AIMEP 2024, we enjoyed an insightful discussion with Ustad Miftah Rakhmat, Head of the Shura Consultative Council at the Indonesian Ahlulbait Community Association (IJABI), and Assoc Prof Zuleyha Keskin, Associate Head of School at the Centre of Islamic Studies and Civilisation, Charles Sturt University.
