Struggling with assessing your students' English language skills after the GenAI genie has been let out of the bottle? I ran a workshop today on this topic with some great teachers from Benelux and Switzerland. Sharing my summary slide below. One thing that surprised me was the range of approaches that schools take to GenAI - everything from full-blooded embrace to virtual exorcisms. Really tricky for teachers and students to navigate through this....

Professor Galimberti is always an illuminating voice in the landscape of education in Italy… 🇮🇹 In the post in question, shared by La Stampa, the philosopher and professor highlights the importance of questions as well as that of answers, in an era where the latter abound, but the former are lacking. 😔 I have always believed that the engine of effective education is curiosity, but how can curiosity arise if not from the questions themselves? And how can we ask questions if, almost before we pose them, tools like ChatGPT, or the algorithms of social media platforms that know us better than we know ourselves, have already provided us with the answers? 🤔 Instilling the famous DOUBT about things, helping to destroy certainties and prejudices to create new ones and form independent thinkers, will be one of the greatest challenges of our generation. 🧑🧑🧒🧒 I believe that the Italian school, a system with enormous unrealised potential in terms of accessibility and the cultural tradition of our country, has the duty to ask these questions, and to do so while also keeping another objective in mind. 🎯 I am referring to the need to provide students with the tools to realise themselves personally first and foremost, but also professionally, through greater guidance that increases awareness regarding the world of work, from which even many university students unfortunately seem completely detached. 🎓😰 Follow Samuele Giabardo for more #education content. #education #university #school

Many people believe that once their language skills are better, they’ll automatically be able to speak up in meetings and make presentations with confidence. But that’s not the case. Language proficiency us just one element that’s necessary. To make yourself heard whether it’s in social interactions at the coffee machine, raising points in the the team meeting or presenting your ideas on stage at the congress you have to first feel comfortable being visible. Think about it, how can you possibly use any of your language skills if the very thought of being visible terrifies you? What do you think? I’m Louise and I help non-native introverted scientists in the Pharma and Biotech industry gain the confidence to be seen and heard so they can get the recognition they deserve and desire. DM me to arrange a discovery call to see how we might work together to achieve your goals. #pharma #scientist #communicationskills #personaldevelopment

Doctors: How do you know you are making progress? When you get on a train from A to B, each station you pass reassures you that you're going in the right direction. 🚉 It's similar on a canal boat, but the journey is slower. 🚣♂️ We all learn at different speeds, but we all want to know we are making progress. But with language learning, we can't measure our progress as easily as a journey in kilometers (or miles in the UK 🙂 ). So, how can you measure your progress? 🎤 Record yourself speaking regularly. Listen to the recordings and do the following: 1️⃣ Note the words you once found difficult to pronounce that you now pronounce effortlessly. 2️⃣ Count the self-corrections: They show your improved ability to identify and correct your own errors. 3️⃣ Count your hesitations and filler words: 'mm' and 'ah'; fewer of these indicate increased fluency. 4️⃣ Make a note of words you now use that were once only in your passive vocabulary. These are your stations, showing you that you are on the right track. This is why I ask all my clients to record themselves. I want them to hear their progress and notice what I hear. 👩⚕️ How do you measure your progress? 👨⚕️ Share your methods in the comments below. ________________ 🌸 Connect Rachel Williams I get international doctors having fluent, meaningful conversations in English. Pic: Not #WFH. The most southern spot in Scotland. Expect some posts on English language varieties soon.
