Last night, I watched the Men's 58 KG Taekwondo final of the 2024 Paris Olympics—the same weight class I competed in during the 1988 Olympics but lost in the first round. Yes, I was that skinny back then! 😅 A few fun facts you might not know: 1. In 1988 when I was competing in the Olympics, Taekwondo was just a demonstration sport. It took 12 more years for it to become an official Olympic event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 2. Many factors determine if and when a demonstration sport becomes official, including equal opportunities for both genders, inclusivity, a trial period to gauge interest, and—most importantly—its "appeal and marketability," meaning it needs to attract enough live audience and strong viewership. 3. While Taekwondo originated in Korea, they don't always win. In fact, Korea didn’t win any gold medals in Taekwondo at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Even last night’s 58 KG match marked the first time Korea won gold medal in this weight category. This got me thinking about the parallels between sports and innovation again. Innovation, much like Olympic sports, can come from anywhere, and leadership can also emerge from anywhere, regardless of where something originates and who used to dominate. Looking at the big picture and in the long run, whether in sports or innovation, it needs to be global, inclusive, and beneficial to the majority. And in the end, the market has the final say. Do you agree? #Paris2024 #Olympics #Innovation #Globalization #Sports

Athletes may be the best people to learn discipline from – they follow strict regimes, and discipline is paramount to their success. This resonates deeply when we consider the strategies for preventing overtraining and burnout. Discipline isn’t just about pushing harder; it’s also about knowing when to rest, recover, and adjust your training. It’s about listening to your body, prioritizing recovery, and implementing structured training plans like periodization to ensure sustainable success. By embracing discipline, we can achieve a balanced approach that promotes long-term physical and mental well-being. Let’s take a page from the athletes' playbook and apply these principles to our own journeys. #Discipline #AthleteMindset #MentalResilience #SustainableSuccess
Struggling with discipline? Athletes may be the best people to learn it from - they follow strict regimes, and discipline is paramount to their success. The 2021 badminton world champion Loh Kean Yew from Singapore says that discipline means doing things you have to do, even when you don’t feel like it. For Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu, having passion for the sport makes it natural for her to give it her all. Meanwhile, Prannoy HS says that discipline is a habit that he’s had since he was a kid, having to train while attending school at the same time. 🏸 As I watched the shuttlecock soar across the court, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the game of badminton and the world of digital marketing. In both arenas, success is not merely about skill, but about strategy and adaptability. Just like a skilled badminton player anticipates their opponent's moves, a successful digital marketer must anticipate shifts in the market and consumer behavior. So, as I lace up my badminton shoes for another match, I'm reminded of the lessons this sport has taught me about resilience, strategy, and teamwork. Here's to smashing goals, both on and off the court. 🏸💼 #DigitalMarketing #Strategy #Teamwork #Adaptability #Badminton

Smashing Goals On and Off the Court: Lessons from Badminton for Digital Marketers Being both a digital marketer and a passionate badminton player, I've realized that success principles apply both on the court and in the digital world. Just like in badminton, where precision, strategy, and perseverance are key to winning, the same holds for digital marketing. In badminton, each shot is crucial. Whether it’s a strong smash or a delicate drop shot, every move is carefully planned to outwit the opponent. Similarly, in digital marketing, every campaign, post, and interaction with our audience presents an opportunity to make a difference. Just as a badminton player strives to enhance their technique and strategy, we, as digital marketers, must continuously learn and innovate to stay ahead. Together, let's serve up success both on and off the court! #DigitalMarketing #Badminton #Success #Strategy #Perseverance

𝐀𝐧 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐩-𝟔 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖 When USA Team Handball set its sights on a top-6 Olympic finish, it was clear: we needed more than just raw talent. By 2028, the goals included: ↳ 40 elite athletes per gender in the national pool ↳ Regular high-level competition and international exposure ↳ Top-2 regional finishes for Olympic qualification 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒔: As of 2024, USATH is advancing steadily toward these targets. Currently, 6 players from the Women’s National Team (WNT) are competing with clubs eligible for international club competitions, such as the #EuropeanCup or #ChampionsLeague. Although only one of these players is currently professional, this exposure is a crucial step in building competitive depth. 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆 We’re also in advanced talks to establish club partnerships in 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇪 Germany, and 🇳🇱 Netherlands. These partnerships aim to station WNT pool players at specific clubs with a vision of developing them into professional athletes. Establishing these connections will be transformative, enabling our athletes to train and compete at the highest levels of international #handball. Building a competitive edge requires sustained resources, dedicated partnerships, and a shared commitment to #Olympic excellence. ➡️ Next Post: The Financial Foundation – Funding the Dream: https://lnkd.in/eyGwcsQk ⬅️ Previous Post: The Big Vision (2018 vs. Today): https://lnkd.in/eKJkbDuu

Only 4 of 48 events in Paris 2024 have been a part of the Summer Olympics since their re-establishment in 1896: 🏊♂️ Swimming 🏃♂️ Track & Field 🤺 Fencing 🤸 Gymnastics Since 1896, the Olympic Games have grown from 241 to over 10,000 competitors, adding and removing nearly 100 events since 1980. Despite many hopefuls, only a few activities secure a spot in the Olympic program. Here's how to get a sport into the Olympics ⬇️ 1. Recognition 👀 The first step to becoming an Olympic sport is recognition by the IOC, requiring an international nongovernmental organization to oversee it 🌍🏅. Next, it must achieve International Sports Federation (IF) status and enforce the World Anti-Doping Code 🚫💉. 2. Application 📥 But IOC recognition doesn't guarantee Olympic participation. Sports like bowling and fishing are technically recognized but not included in the games. The sport’s IF must apply for admittance, and the IOC can admit it as a sport, discipline, or event 📋✅. 3. Criteria 📋 To join the Olympics, a sport must be widely practiced: by men in 75+ countries and by women in 40+ countries 🌍🏅. It also must “adhere to modern athletic traditions” so mind sports and mechanically propelled sports, like chess and racing, are excluded 🚫♟️🏎️. 4. Management ⚙️ In recent years, the IOC manages the Olympics' scope by adding new sports only when others are discontinued. Existing sports are reviewed periodically, and venue challenges for sports like baseball and softball arise that can impact inclusion. What sport do you want to see in 2028?
