I learned driving a 4-wheeler at 31!
Yes, you’ve read it right, I didn’t know how to drive a car until recently, and it never bothered me.
The day it did start to bother me, I learned it, and I aced it, and got my 4-wheeler license too(through the right way, not the usual way in India)
Now why am I sharing this here on LinkedIn?
In today’s day and age, kids half my age (and not even legally) are seen driving all around our country, so a lot of people would always question me about why I didn’t learn driving a car yet, given that my father had a car ever since I was 10 and I’ve been privileged that way!
But as I said, I never felt the need to, and when I did, I learned!
I gathered 3 important learning points, other than the actual driving skill through my rendezvous:
1. That’s life, you do not necessarily need to acquire a skill unless you actually have to put it to use and once you do need it then make sure you ace it. Don’t just give into the voices around you, take your time and decide for yourself as to when you need to learn a skill and put it to use rather than being a part of the herd!
2. The biggest motivator and teacher of mine in this journey was my dear friend Samir Chaudhari , a man I am privileged to know. While everyone else simply told me either that I am too late to learn or I am wasting my time on a tertiary skill, this man always helped me sitting by my side and teaching me the nuances of being a safe rider, getting the right kind of grip and control, and then giving me proper hours into the skill to actually become proficient.
3. Why aren’t there more people like Samir in our professional lives? Why aren’t people interested in showing us the path to learn new skills for a job or new ways for a job change and ways to upgrade ourselves as the market needs, instead of just telling us what we don’t have and pinning us down with a plethora of negativity?
Be a mentor to someone if you can, teach them ways to upgrade themselves and add to their portfolio of skills, show them the correct path ahead and motivate them to do it right! Don’t try the path where your only job is to demean people and tell them what they lack to an extent where they start getting existential doubts!
Be a good human being and a good motivator.
