The election turnout was historic, and the result was clear. We love democracy even when we don’t win, though. No matter what side of the great political divide, or no side you are on, Springboard carries on with support for you in your quest to build companies to scale and sustainability.   Unfortunately, this election result is a blow to women’s rights we have fought so long to secure.    Upon reflection on what just happened to reset the US and the global economy writ large. New challenges will emerge, and others will recede, but I want our community to know that our conviction behind our support for all alumnae is as strong as it has ever been. We move on to the future of resilience and innovation, building wealth for our alumnae and reinvesting it in those coming after us. Watching children create "stained glass" art at Manchester Mela while learning about our city's history reminded me why this matters. August 1st ChicoSTART had the opportunity to travel down to the Sacramento State Carlsen Center of Innovation to catch a fireside chat with Victor Hwang, CEO of Right to Start, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that fights to expand entrepreneurial opportunity for all. You may remember Victor as our GrowTECH FEST Keynote in 2021. Victor shared about how starting and growing a business is such a huge challenge for entrepreneurs, filled with barriers that make it difficult to even start. Through the Right to Start organization, Victor and his team team want to "drive civic change through: grassroots organizing and mobilizing, policy advocacy and engagement, and lifting the voices of entrepreneurs through media and storytelling". Below are the Statement of Principals Right To Start agrees with and supports policies to realize them: 1. Everyone has the fundamental Right to Start. 2. We must protect and nourish starters. 3. To level the playing field, tilt it. 4. Renewal comes bottom-up. 5. Grow ecosystems to grow economies. 6. All of us matter. It's safe to say this has been an unprecedented week for all of us. In the spirit of staying positive and building a stronger community during challenging times, here are some of my favorite highlights from last week's edition of WWV Labs Her Hustle newsletter: - With Trump back in office, Jesse Draper of Halogen Ventures calls on VCs to double down on supporting female founders, as the administration’s deprioritization of diversity could create even more obstacles for female founders. Yet, despite new challenges, Draper expects consumer brands, particularly those focused on family life and essential household needs, to remain resilient. - Black women business leaders are reacting to Trump's re-election with both resilience and realism, as leaders like Pinky Cole and Dr. Peggy Roberts express concerns about potential setbacks in equity and funding, particularly for Black women-led businesses. Despite the challenges, these fierce founders are already strategizing new ways to adapt, emphasizing community support and financial diversification to ensure their ventures not only survive but thrive. - Female-led BBG Ventures has closed a $60M fund to support diverse founders, reaffirming its commitment to backing female entrepreneurs and expanding its focus to include founders of all backgrounds. - The persistent health data gap for women presents a massive opportunity for femtech founders to leverage AI and fill critical gaps in research, driving innovations that can transform women’s healthcare. I started the Male Mogul Initiative in 2016 while working on the West Side of Chicago. I met a young man who made a significant impression on me. He was a promising basketball player with strong academic credentials. He had a scholarship lined up for college. This might sound reductive, but to put it bluntly, he was a good kid - a great kid. He also sold drugs. He felt he needed to do so to provide for himself and his family. The impact of this meeting on me was substantial and provided the genesis for the Male Mogul Initiative. The root cause of this young man's problem was not an inability to thrive or a deficit of character. It was a lack of exposure and access to responsible options to thrive and provide, and as a result, he found himself on a dangerous and immoral path. Hundreds, if not thousands, of these young individuals are on Chicago's South and West Sides. Unfortunately, the youth in these communities are not proximate to many positive role models or good examples. This is what I set out to address with the Male Mogul Initiative: to provide direction to good students through mentorship programs. Because they deserve it. As our organization has grown, our mission has remained the same, but the mechanics through which we prepare our participants have evolved. Today (and for the last few years), we emphasize entrepreneurship and business education as central topics within all of our programs. We believe in our participants. We encourage them to utilize their intelligence and creativity to develop business ideas. From there, we provide the guidance and expertise to create a sustainable and economically viable plan for their products or services. We now own and operate a creative warehouse (our Co-LLAB space), within which our Moguls are developing and producing exceptional merchandise. We don't just mentor our participants to be the best versions of themselves (though, of course, we do that as well). We teach them how to hustle. We guide them to leverage their creativity and be pillars of positive business and social examples within their communities.
