Generations of Opportunity and Pride For years, Chatham Docks has been a source of pride for families across Medway. Generations have built their lives here, working in industries like manufacturing, transport, and storage, which keep our local economy thriving. The docks have provided high-quality jobs with good wages and apprenticeship opportunities, giving countless people rewarding careers and brighter futures. They’ve shaped our community and contributed over 4% of Medway’s economy making them vital to our region’s success. Let’s protect this legacy for future generations. #SaveChathamDocks. 📷 Aerial shot 1984 #MedwayJobs #ChathamDocks #Nostalgia

A few weeks ago I participated in a panel discuss for medway Council on subjects such as how to motivate gen Z Here were my thoughts: At first I was anti-apprentice , they cost time and money to train. However I listened to my colleague and trusted side kick James Armstrong who was raised through an apprenticeship scheme and thrived. He took the reins and helped hire our first apprentice. For the first year, there was ups and downs, which can be expected of course. Now, 2 years later, him and 2 other apprentices are thriving and will be a crucial part of our business in the future. They work hard every day and often shine as an example to anyone/ any customer who watches over them. How did we get here? Honesty. when they weren't performing, they were told that they need to focus and decide what they want in life. If they don't want to be here, they are free to leave, we are going places and we want the same attitude from everyone here. Trust. They are trusted to be responsible adults and to make decisions themselves. Respect. They are not treated like shit. They are treated with respect provided they earn the respect by showing up every day, working hard and aiming to improve. An example of this was one of the apprentices who has been here 2 years, had a slight issue with another member of staff who had been here less than a year. The time didn't matter, but when we found out how the apprentice was treated, I explained how it would be dealt with and that the experienced plumber would be dealt with accordingly. Everyone should feel comfortable at work, and when that balance is disturbed it needs addressing seriously with consequences. Time. Give them time and your time. Make them feel appreciated and wanted. Allow them to contribute to discussions and team meetings and take their opinions seriously. Some of my best insights on the ground have come from the apprentices being honest and true. Future. Let them see where they stand in your business in the future and decide if it matches what they want. Help them develop and invest in them. Interested to hear other people's thoughts and opinions I dont believe in categorising into generations, gender, age. I think the above applies to all, this just further divides everyone when we need unity. thankyou Sean Henry and Medway Council and a thankyou to the apprentices, elliot, Ryan and elliot.

Young Carers Action Day 2024 takes place on Wednesday 13th March. The focus is ‘Fair Futures for Young Carers’ highlighting why caring should not be a barrier to learning, earning or being able to get on in life – but for many it is. Young Carers Action Day is on Wednesday 13th March. Its theme is Fair Futures for Young Carers focussing on why caring should not be a barrier to learning, earning or being able to get on in life – but for many, it is. Carers Trusts’ 2023 Young Carers' Survey showed ONE in THREE young carers struggle to balance caring with education, this can have a big impact on whether they can get on at school, go to university, or get a job or an apprenticeship. Caring can massively affect their life opportunities and plans – and changes in policy, practice and investments are needed to give young carers the support and flexibility they need to thrive. Throughout my time working at Fleet Feet so far I have gained a lot of experience. With each day I work a learn a new task and eventually learn how to do it on my own. I have seen lots of different people’s need for specific shoes and items that can help them. I have also seen how many people enjoy running just as much as I do by coming in the store and spreading their thoughts about running. I have done many online orders and receiving shipments in boxes. I have also learned about scanning in new inventory and stocking the shelves back up. By learning the importance of each shoe I can educate buyers on which shoes will best fit their needs. This job has been beneficial by having the opportunity to learn more social skills. By talking one on one with many customers everyday I learn how to communicate with them and find out their opinions about each item I fit them for or bring out. The skills I have learned in this job is beneficial by having the necessary skills needed for my profession, like communication among peers and customers, finding the best ways to help customers meet their needs in any way.
