India is now the “fastest-growing developer population on the planet,” according to GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Dohmke highlighted India’s momentum as a “global tech titan,” noting its developers’ increasing engagement with AI technologies. India now ranks second globally in contributions to public generative AI projects, following the United States, with Hong Kong, China, Germany, Japan, and other countries rounding out the top ten. With over 15.4 million developers in India and a 33% year-on-year growth on GitHub, India is projected to surpass the United States as the largest developer community by 2027. Dohmke shared that AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot are already boosting developer productivity, with Indian developers completing tasks 55% faster. This shift is not only accelerating software development but is also creating opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship in India, he added while speaking at GitHub Galaxy Bengaluru. “Where software developers are, economic growth follows,” Dohmke stated, as quoted by Business Standard. This sentiment aligns with projections for the global AI market, expected to grow by 25-35% CAGR to reach between $320 billion and $380 billion by 2027. According to the IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023, Indian enterprises lead globally in AI adoption, with 59% actively using AI and 74% boosting AI investments for R&D and workforce reskilling over the last two years. IBM also noted that a lack of AI skills remains a bottleneck for many organizations, underscoring the importance of AI education and workforce development. A Deloitte survey further revealed that India leads the Asia-Pacific region in generative AI adoption, with 93% of students and 83% of employees actively using AI.
