A big step in the right direction for automobile manufacturing in Sri Lanka. This is the biggest SKD assembly plant in South Asia. SKD stands for Semi Knockdown Kits, which arrive as partially assembled vehicles with some value addition being done locally in this case. We have several operations like this in the country already but not with such vast factory floor space. It was wrongly interpreted by several news outlets and thereafter political commentators as the largest automobile manufacturing plant in this region or as claiming to be, which is completely out of the question as this is a factory that only assembles partially assembled vehicles with a few locally manufactured components to produce complete vehicles for the local market and possibly for exports in future. Political implications aside this is a monumental moment for the local automotive industry. As a nation we are learning about high quality, durable, high volume automotive manufacturing at a rapid rate. Each factory built and each vehicle assembled adds to the local knowledge pool on the intricacies of vehicle assembly and the standards to adhere to. Each component that is outsourced to a local manufacturer brings on new expertise and support to our industry that we desperately need to hone our manufacturing skills and techniques with regards to automotive components. Once upon a time China too struggled to get globally competitive automotive products out of their factories. It took years of partnerships with international automotive giants to bring the expertise needed to succeed. We too will one day make our very own cars, cars that can compete on the global stage.
