First full day of the new government and Anglian Water Services are back doing what they do all too often, it’s business as usual for water companies #pollutingforprofit. For our new environment Secretary, Steve Reed, this has to be top of his in-tray. Big commitments have been made to stop this dereliction of the law and I’m sure we will see a very significant change of direction from a government that has committed to stop the sewage crisis. #sewagescandal #sickofsewage

How much does it cost to shut down the Chattahoochee River at the height of summer recreation? According to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, just $1,000 per day. After months of negotiations, Georgia EPD has released a draft Enforcement Order for Fulton County’s Big Creek wastewater treatment plant failure. The summer 2023 failure sent millions of gallons per day of improperly treated sewage into the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, causing the National Park Service to shut down river access within the park for 20 days to protect public health. EPD’s proposed fine of $113,600 ties together 53 other sewer spills in Fulton County with no connection to the plant’s failure. And the penalty for the 20-day river closure? Just $20,000, or $1,000 per day. This fine is incredibly inadequate based on harm done to the river ecosystem and public health. It tells Georgia municipalities that they can get away with paying minimal fines rather than abide by the Clean Water Act. 📢 TAKE ACTION: Tell Georgia EPD how the Big Creek failure impacted you and demand full enforcement of the Clean Water Act.
