level retention (FLR) is a feature offered by some NAS (Network Attached Storage) systems that allows you to protect specific files from being accidentally deleted or modified for a set period. It essentially functions like a "write once, read many" (WORM) system for your files. 👉🏻Here's a breakdown of how FLR works: ✏️Locking Files: When you enable FLR on a file, it becomes locked. This means the file is protected from deletion or changes by users accessing the NAS through protocols like SMB, NFS, or FTP. ✏️Retention Period: You define a specific retention period for the locked file. This determines how long the file will be undeletable and unmodifiable. ✏️Expiry and Access: Once the retention period expires, the FLR protection on the file automatically gets removed. You, or authorized users, can then delete or modify the file as needed. 👉🏻There are often different versions of FLR offered by NAS vendors, with varying functionalities. 🎯Here's a common example: ✏️FLR-Enterprise (FLR-E): This version protects files from user modifications and deletion. However, storage administrators with higher privileges can still bypass FLR-E and delete the entire file system, even if it contains locked files. Some NAS systems might offer a more robust version: ✏️FLR-Compliance (FLR-C): This version provides stricter protection. It prevents not just users but also administrators from deleting a file system containing locked files. The administrator must wait for all FLR-protected files within the system to expire before deleting it. FLR-C may also offer additional features like data integrity checks and restrictions on snapshots. 👉🏻Benefits of FLR: ✏️Prevents Accidental Deletion: FLR safeguards important files from accidental deletion by users. ✏️Regulatory Compliance: It can help meet data retention requirements for various regulations in certain industries. ✏️Data Integrity: FLR-C can offer additional assurance of data integrity by preventing unauthorized modifications. 👇🏻Things to Consider: ✏️NAS Compatibility: FLR is not a universal feature and depends on the specific NAS system and its software version. ✏️Storage Management: FLR can impact storage management as it restricts deletion for a period. Make sure you have sufficient storage space for the duration of the retention period.
