Gun violence is more prominent than ever, but that doesn’t mean we should stop working toward finding solutions. NewsNation recently spotlighted Tennessee’s move to allow schools to arm teachers and staff, featuring LENX as a possible alternative. Whatever your beliefs, everyone can agree that something more needs to be done to protect children from gun violence. However, more guns at schools are not the answer. Saturday's tragic events in Pennsylvania further reinforce the crucial message of the Regulate Guns NOT Women campaign. We are committed to spreading this campaign nationwide to elect officials who champion this cause. Our thoughts are with Mr. Comperatore's family, and we wish a speedy recovery to all those affected, including former president Trump. Violence is never the solution. It's time for safe gun policies. Let's remove AR-15's and AK-47's from our streets. Background checks and closing gun show loopholes are imperative. Join us in our grassroots efforts across Georgia and beyond to advocate for responsible gun regulations. Now, more than ever, let's work together for a safer future. #GunControl #SafetyFirst

If an imitation gun appears on a school campus—is this a valid concern? Unfortunately, yes. Imitation and non-lethal gun-related incidents can still cause physical, mental, and financial repercussions across a school #community. In K-12 institutions, our Gun Violence Research Center (GVRC) saw a sharp increase in imitation guns and false active shooter reports. Over the 2022/2023 to 2023/2024 school years, the GVRC reported that the use of imitation and non-lethal guns increased by 89.9%. The rise in events like swatting, hoaxes, and live “games” like Senior Assassins has contributed to this increase. ❓Why is this an issue? 👉These events can cause mistaken identity, panic/mass hysteria, and possible officer involvement. The majority of school shootings are perpetrated by minors whose caretakers fail to secure a gun. The majority of school shootings are preventable. As a teacher, I will never shut up about the proven effectiveness of safe storage laws: holding gun owners accountable for keeping weapons out of the hands of kids! Nearly every school shooting would cease to exist if caretakers secured guns. Caretakers need to be held accountable. We cannot predict who will shoot up a school, but we CAN keep guns away from kids! “Thoughts and prayers” are not enough. FBI data confirms that hurt people do NOT hurt people on this scale, or with this lethal force, minus a gun. These are facts. This is preventable. There is blood on the hands of those who stand in the way of safe storage laws. Go to the National Memorial to Fallen Teachers. Read the stories. Let the weight of each life sink in. What other country needs such a monstrousity? What other country shrugs when adults hand guns to children?!

Research has shown that online activity can contribute to offline gun violence in various forms. Furthermore, social media exposes young people to gun culture, as teens flaunt weapons for clout and make connections to buy guns illegally. There is an importance of paying closer attention to what's happening online to identify and de-escalate conflicts before they escalate into violence. #GunViolence #YouthMentalHealth #SocialMediaImpact

Thoughts and prayers aren't enough. Action is needed. Let's work together to dismantle gun culture and create a safer USA and world. Kids are dying because of the insecurity of a few people. Some Intermediate Solutions: (You can add more, LinkedIn) 1. Provide training to gun owners on how to stay calm and keep weapons in a safe place, out of reach of kids. 2. Empower the police. 3. Train volunteers and spread awareness. 4. Build an association of people who have suffered in the past due to gun violence and empower them to speak. Don't miss this virtual panel event on "Perspectives on American Gun Violence" on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 12-1:30pm ET. The epidemic of gun violence in the United States is a multifaceted problem that claimed nearly 47,000 lives in 2023, accounting for more than one million potential years of life lost. Firearm injuries and deaths touch countless others as well – from bereaved family members to affected communities suffering the collective loss and trauma of everyday gun violence. In a nation where private ownership of firearms is commonplace, culturally rooted, and constitutionally protected, efforts to prevent gun violence must balance public safety goals with individual rights and political considerations. Broadened dialogue across fields is needed to identify tensions as well as areas of complementarity. By bringing together national experts and leaders to examine gun violence through alternative lenses, this discussion will help to foster innovative solutions and collaborations that can help mitigate the scourge of gun violence in America. Our goal is to move beyond isolated efforts and towards a more unified and impactful approach. Sponsored by the Wilson Center for Science and Justice, the Duke Center for Firearms Law, and Duke Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Register at: https://lnkd.in/eBAzZtue

Last week we wrapped up a pivotal 3-part series on ending gun violence in Chicago. --The first program focused on community safety. --The second program highlighted ending the flow of illegal guns in community. --The final program emphasized the influence of youth & social media in interrupting gun violence. You can read that story below. We created this series to reframe the discussion around gun violence prevention and public safety by examining solutions and prevention strategies, among other evidence-informed tactics. We're working with our partners to produce a comprehensive white paper for regional policymakers, positioning gun policy as central to public safety debates. Enormous thanks to our partners at City Club of Chicago, our media partner WTTW/Chicago PBS, event moderators Brandis Griffith Friedman & Joanna Hernandez, and communications strategist Laurie Glenn & her team at THINKINC for a successful collaboration. Thanks, also, to every panelist and organization that participated. All of our efforts and strategies are central to eliminating gun in Chicago. We know it can be done. #EndingGunViolence #EndingGunViolenceChicago #GunViolencePrevention #PublicSafety #PublicPolicy #Chicago https://lnkd.in/g5m52QFe
