We were proud to welcome the Western Arts Alliance (WAA) to the historic Balboa Theatre during their annual conference in San Diego. Our Director of Programming, Cindy Bowers, was part of the 2024 WAA Annual Conference Planning Committee, representing San Diego Theatres as we joined WAA in fostering connections and dialogue within the performing arts community. Together, we share a commitment to uniting people through the power of live performance. 🎭✨ #2024WAA #WesternArtsAlliance

PACTcon starts tomorrow in Montreal. Meanwhile the open letter led by Labour in the Arts has gained over 400 signatures from arts workers across Turtle Island. Visit LIA Instagram below to read the non-response from Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). There is a giant gulf between priorities of the artists and workers in our sector versus its leaders. While PACT may not want to do any of the things requested, their response is wholly tepid and uncreative, doing nothing to lessen the divide. Why not, at a minimum, invite LIA for a facilitated conversation? Instead the conference will carry on, business as usual, while the world does not. If you are attending this year's conference, I am imploring you to keep this letter in the front of your mind whether you agree with it or not. Attend the one session that hints at this letter, being about "divisive issues," and speak up. We valorize our art form as being subversive and yet the majority of it couldn't be less so. Ignoring the voices of workers will only lead to more alienation and flight from the industry leaving only the privileged to keep making meaningless entertainment. https://lnkd.in/giQteY5V
OPEN LETTER TO Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), read and sign here: https://lnkd.in/dBnQwBRJ Our sector is a very precarious place to speak up and yet we are. Are organizations are very eager to speak about decolonization and reconciliation and yet they remain silent. No more status quo in Canadian Theatre. We demand our leaders be the leaders they need to be.

So, with inimitable timing today we launched the Incentivised Touring Fund. Practically, it's a repayable grant with fairly narrow criteria that addresses a particular part of the touring ecology. More expansively, it's a really interesting response by a public funder to the documented challenges of touring. It's been so interesting to be up close to the development of this fund for lots of reasons. It's not replacing the touring strand of Project Grants, but is intended to support greater opportunity through project grants to support small to mid-scale touring. There's lots I could say about it, but mostly would be quite niche process chat. What's important next is seeing the money doing intended job, and supporting touring of great theatre and dance. Particularly for the North, this is how we get amazing things coming to our towns and cities and support a diverse cultural ecology where we live.
In recognition of the growing challenges around mid and large-scale regional touring, we’ve today launched Incentivising Touring: Repayable grants for theatre and dance. This pilot scheme has been developed in close collaboration with the sector and will support touring productions with commercial potential – helping to bring more high-quality work to people across the country. For this year's celebration, it will be a little more comfortable... 🤩 One hundred years after the first season, the Welttheater Einsiedeln will be staged as an open-air theater for the 17th time in 2024. For the 100th anniversary, there will be covered grandstands for the audience for the first time. These are currently being erected by our crew members in front of the baroque monastery church ⛪ 🛠️. They are nimble. Every move is perfect, and the grandstands are growing day by day, as you can see in the following video 😊 #eventstructures #eventbau #temporarysolutions #eventsolution #buildingbigmoments #buildingmemories #sustainability #connectingyou

"We first reported that Arlington's beloved Regent Theatre was up for sale back in the spring. It took a while to find just the right buyer, but the effort paid off! David J. Malan, a professor of computer science at Harvard who is known for his 'educational theatricality,' is the new owner of the Regent. He's committed to maintaining the theater's status as Arlington's 'Showplace of Entertainment.' Live music and dance, theater, comedy, films, family entertainment, cultural events... you'll still find them all at the Regent. But David has ambitious plans to expand the theater's reach even further, to include educational programming that will make use of streaming to reach audiences beyond Arlington. ACMi News paid a visit to the Regent to talk to its owners, old and new!" https://lnkd.in/e-HjkKvr

Today's decision by New York Governor Kathy Hochul to indefinitely put off implementing congestion pricing has plenty of people in the New York City tri-state area relieved. It would have imposed an added $15 cost on cars entering New York City below 60th Street. One sector that should be pleased about the move is Broadway. The entire theatre district is located within the congestion pricing area. Traditionally, a third of Broadway tickets are sold to residents of the greater New York City region. And not all of those show goers take mass transit to get there. In fact, concerns over late trains or buses, or poor transit options, drive plenty of audience members to get in the car and head to Midtown. It's no secret that Broadway tickets are expensive. So is gas. Drivers have already traveled toll roads to get to the city. And if street parking is unavailable, well, garages can cost $30, $40 and even $50 for an evening. Want to grab dinner? A drink? You're looking at a very costly night out. Broadway ticket sales to buyers in the tri-state have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. An added cost just to get to the theatre was not going to help bring them back. #Broadway #Theatre #NYC

Thoughts on Commercial Theatre: The heart of commercial theatre beats with the pulse of community investment. If we want to see Broadway—and the arts as a whole—thrive, we must rethink our investor model. Imagine systems that lower the investment threshold to welcome more voices and visions. #Broadway #BroadwayComments #InvestmentInTheArts #CommunityDrivenTheatre #ArtAsInvestment
